Do you do your own taxes? If not, who does?

Just curious - its that time of year again!

I do my own-I normally use TurboTax and then efile w/ direct deposit. I am not expecting a major return this year, and appreciate the child tax credit very much!
Most of my information is from personal experience or HOURS and HOURS of online research. When you're searching online, keep in mind there is no guarantee that the info is completely up to date, and your situation is unique from anyone else's. Do your homework, and consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision.

I have too much weird stuff...

to do my own...took $20K out of retirement fund last year to pay off 4 year of IRS debt...did not want to be on a pay plan to them...on advice of pre-bk filing...so even though my W-2's are easy...I don't know if I could do it on my own this year...maybe next?

Rather have someone else do it...not HR Block either...I go to a company on the island...

        I do 'em.

Why pay someone else to do something that I am perfectly capable of?

I don't do my own, for years a friend did them that worked for a CPA. I got used to that and now I go to the lady that did my parents for many years. We have a small business, that can't seem to get off the ground, bad weather & bad health. She doesn't charge a lot and keeps up with all the new laws etc., worth it to me not to hassle with it. Besides I am into helping small businesses out, this country is getting away from that, it is corporate everything everywhere you look.
Hope because of the gas prices, husbands health etc., we can do more with this business. The year is looking up for that, we helped a friend out with the sale of her deceased husband's shop. My husband has sorted and sold her husband's shop in exchange for some machinery and materials. Cost is a little time and gas!! Great bargain to us but a bigger help and bargain to a dear friend.
I'll be watching, you may never know when or how, but I'll be there. I am there now....

I do them. Stared after the Corporation went down. Schedule A and the child tax credit are the only extras on mine.

We do our own. TurboTax on-line. efile and usually have the refund direct deposit.

Of course this year, there's no refund. We OWE!! Big time.

How's the IRS payment plan work now, in case we can't come up with the bucks to pay??

A co-worker years ago told me the payments were huge/mo, and so was the interest. They got caught in a lay-off deal with severance and retirement pay-out that wasn't taxed at the time of distribution. If I remember correctly, he said IRS charged 25% interest??!!

hehe, no. irs interest is good. cant remeber how much it is but they work with you fine enough.

its the penalty for not filing and the fees for not paying it that all add up at the start. but thats on you anyway if that happened.

i think its 6%+ a year and is based on prime. its not a great 3% a year but its not 25% either thank god.

We aren't done with the Fed yet. Haven't even looked at state.

TurboTax on-line still hasn't updated for the new college tuition credit/deduction that's become available. Evidently the IRS added that late in the year, so TurboTax won't let us file until they get that incorporated into the software. The amt we owe that TurboTax shows us includes any fees and penalties that would be assessed for under paying our taxes.

If we do file taxes, before we file BK, do the tax payments get fig'd into our budget toward deciding if we go Ch 7 or Ch 13?? Are they a priority debt like child support and such??

ive seen estimated tax payments (which they didnt even owe yet - go figure) on their expenses.

if the trustee complains then show them that you will be paying something to the irs and you certainly cant get out of that.

trustee never complained about it in those cases.

With the exception of the one year I got a "free file" from H&R Block, I have always done my own. Recent years I've gone to the "Turbo Tax" way of life and can't beat it, in my book. Of course, this year I owe $38 to the federal gov't.
I'm not a lawyer or legal expert, just offering advice on what I may have gone through and/or have knowledge of. Good luck!
