Is BK Software a waste of $$$???

Whadya think? Worth the $50 bucks or so just to have everything in front of you and not have to search for forms?

For you Pro Se'ers that used them....any suggestions on which are the best?

Thanks.....I am on a posting spree, so appreciate the responses!

    I'm curious too

I would also like to know what software to use. I had did a search a while back and found a website that for $40 you could do your forms online or for $50 you get a cd-rom to do the paperwork. Unfortunately I can't find that website. Other filers used form-7 but the creator died before an updated version of the software was created to reflect the new laws. If you are going pro-se here are some of your choices: download the forms from the internet and type in the info yourself if you happen to have a typewritter - most people don't but I have an old electric typewritter from my pre-computer days. This choice would be free. You could pay a company such as We the People $299 to type up your paperwork and they can't offer any legal advice and still pay the $274 bk filing fee or you can spend the $50 for the software and try it out and see this is of course if you can swing the expense. If you try my first option you can save the software fee and use it to pay the pre-bk filing fee because we all have to do that one before any papers are filed. This is just my 2 cents. I am in the same boat too.

      Me

I'm not sure which chapter you're planning to file, but after sitting with my attorney and his assistant for 1 1/2 hours doing my paperwork with their software, I don't know how you'd do it without something like a computer program to walk you through it. I'd hate to try to do it all by hand on forms, especially with the means test and exemptions and stuff.

So far as I know, to this point, there aren't any software programs available for New Law Pro Se filers. There were several such programs available for the Old Law.

The Means Test has one area that is difficult to figure out, for me at least. At the end, where you can include the Trustee's Admin Fee. I don't know how to figure that, and none of the attnys explained it to us. I know our fee is 8.5%, but 8.5% of what?? What we'll actually pay back in the plan, 25% of our total unsecured debt, or the whole unsecured debt??!!

I saw one New Law filing where the people went Ch 13. I'm sure it was to save their home and their car. Their arrears on both loans were included in the plan, as was the remainder of the attny's fee. Very little CC debt. Mostly medical types of bills and some special ed costs for one child. Their plan payment ran right at $500/month, the Means Test showed a $75/month Admin Fee. 8.5% of $500 would be about $45. Not the $75 shown on the Means Test. So where did the $75 come from??!! I don't know.

It may be a while yet before there are any software programs available for New Law filers. There haven't been enough cases processed with any significant number of judicial decisions defining areas of how the Law will work.

Best I can suggest is to keep running a regular web search. Maybe something new getting ready to come out right around the corner. You never know.

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.
