You're only out of BK a month.... don't expect someone to hand you credit right away.

Get a secured card, start making payments, and mke sure your credit reports are correct.

Hi was also turned down for the target red card but I do have a orchard bank, crown jeweler credit and a car loan. You have to start small when you begin to rebuild. I know it is discouraging but have you started the process of cleaning up your credit reports and checking to see what your credit scores are? if not that would be the place to start to see exactly where you stand.

Don't be discouraged, I believe you and myself will bounce back. I don't have any mythical stories to tell or anything because I'm fresh into this myself. Hey, I'm still awaiting last day to Object "5/08/06" then following that discharge and close. So you've made a major leap already. Take heed to the sound advice that individuals offer you on the board. They know what's up. I know they have helped me alot. It's alot of stuff you would think would be common sense but since I've been reading the boards I've found that there is a way to handle things. For instance establishing credit before you're discharged or closed, secured or unsecured. I had no clue! My Attny didn't tell me anything on those terms. I was all ready to get secured cards and be on the road to reestablishing. But it makes sense, you WOULDN'T want anything to get your trustee to thinking you've been shady. So, keep your head up. It's gonna be all good. Peace, BabyBankRupt

P.S. I look forward to hearing good news from you. SOON!

Don't be so hard on yourself.

You already know you have issues on your Credit Reports so start to work on those. Getting those cleaned up will help lots towards getting new credit.

Sign up for a Credit Monitoring Service that provides 3 in 1 so you can monitor all 3 CRA's. There's even on-line dispute that may get some things cleared up for you without you even having to write and mail a letter. If you do have to send letters, do it Certified. They can deny you sent a letter of dispute if you don't send it Certified.

What about starting with a secured credit card? You deposit a certain amount in an account, say three or five hundred dollars...and you get a Visa or Mastercard that is good up to the amount of your deposit. Also, try to join a credit union (much, much easier now), and apply for a card through them...good luck! Oh, one other thing...If you join the credit union, put five-hundred dollars (borrow if from someone if you have to) in a six month CD...THEN use the CD as collateral on a five hundred dollar personal loan. When you get the loan, pay back the person you borrowed the money from. This little exercise will cost you only the interest rate, and will build your credit....

Is you score +or- 600? I ask this question because when I first filed I was -500 acroos the board. Doing som work on my reports over the last 2+ months I'm quicky moving towards 550+. I was going to do the "TARGET" thing once I get discharged. I'm hoping to be 600+ by then.
                My credit scores:
Before Filing: Tr 496, Ex 496, Eq 507

                Today: Tr 618 (+122), Ex 601 (+105), Eq 623 (+116)

                    Hey yall

down&out, what alternate ways do you suggest to rebuild credit history. I know it is a timely thing to rebuild a positive credit history but some tell me that I should start as soon as I'm out of this thing and be responsible. Then I read your post suggesting to wait six months"for good approvals on credit cards." What alternate route other than rebuilding with credit cards and lines of credit would you suggest for an individual that's planning on purchasing a vehicle within the next 6 months or a home within the next 24 months?" I mean that's 6 months productive months that you have been laying dormant and idle. It's just me, I'm the soul breadwinner. No rich family, friends, or cousins.. So I have to find the most efficient way to get back on my feet. I'm new to this so I need all the information that my lil ole mind can absorb.

Thanks for all the info that you all have offered thus far.

noitall...capitalizing all of the words is considered shouting so the powers that be on the forum strongly discourage it....

As for rebuilding your credit...I applied for and received a Orchard unsecured card for my husband and myself one month out of BK. We both also have a Target red card. I have a Cap One, Juniper Bank and Hooters cards for both of us. None of these have high limits except Cap One has $1500. It was initially $1000 but they have since raised it. By the way our Target cards were raised to $500 last month. We do NOT want high limit cards. We want cards that we can use for rebuilding credit and emergencies and they have to be manageable. I would check your credit reports(all 3) and make sure the information is correct and if not, begin disputing to the CRAs. It takes time and a lot of work because the CRAs seem to receive and accept information but dont make the changes...at least that is the way it was for us. You may even have to write to the creditors and dispute the information with them as well.

Yes if you receive credit cards right out of BK and you will have to pay a fee. I dont mind the fee because I didnt want secured cards. We also have a loan for a truck we purchased 2 months out of BK and financed it with Ford Motor Credit. They are very BK friendly and thank goodness for them. The interest rate is not great but it isnt in the 20+ percentile either. I was told lenders typically look for scores 650 and up and in fact, one bank in town told me they will NOT consider a loan for someone with less than 650. That may be just that bank but one thing is certain you have to show the lenders you are on the right track with signs of a positive credit history. BK takes a monster hit on your credit but thankfully it isnt terminal. Our scores have gone up a lot since we got the credit cards and truck loan. Obviously we are paying on time and paying off the credit cards at the end of the month which I think is essential especially coming right out of BK. Good luck..
