Wondering if anyone has ever contacted a trustee (possibly by email), pre-bankruptcy (especially if you are pro se--or at least telling them that you are), to clarify a legal question (i.e. classifying an exemption)?

Not in the sense I think you are asking. However many trustees do take on clients. My attorney is a trustee and I emailed him questions and had a consult with him regarding a couple of issues before I retained him. So you might find out who the trustees are and schedule an appointment with one or more that take clients. You don't have to mention you will probably file pro se.

I did once early on. I called one Trustee's office with a "general" information question. I got the "We cannot legally advise you" routine. I said it was just a general question. But they still would not answer. I was told to ask my attny.
Maybe you'll have a different experience, Anon.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.
