I am reading that some people on here are wanting to apply and get credit cards right after bankruptcy!!! That is insane and just unreal. Just think about it for a minute... credit and overextending yourself is what caused you to go into bankruptcy.. You are now debt free and your money is freed up so you can save it and live without the visa and mastercard bill every month but yet the first thing you are concerned about is how can I get another card! People, you need to start learning on how to live on what you make and save what you can. Would you rather continue making the Visa people richer or would you rather put that money away for yourselves??? Credit cards are a very bad thing in our society. I have read and heard many sad stories about debt and what it does to some of you people and I feel bad for ya because I am in the same boat. But why not try to live on what you make and stop borrowing money!!! People say credit cards are great for emergencies... WRONG! Save up at least 1,000 in a savings account and contribute what you can every pay day so if the transmission needs an overhaul in your ride you will have the money to pay cash for the repair and it is done with!!! But I dont get some of you people and wanting credit again right after your slate has been wiped clean and you have a fresh start. Not trying to sound mean but you people wanting credit already need to wake up and think about what your doing and then think about what it feels like to be debt free and then what it felt like having debt.

*Yawn*
I have read Dave Ramsey's book. I Have heard his radio program, and have seen his seminars on video tape.
The man is completely realistic. While he does have some good points once in a great while, he also doens't live in reality like the rest of us do. He makes MILLIONS a year, giving "advice" to people who make only pennies compared to him.
He encourages people to be away from their families to pay off debt, and to destroy their marriages, if one partner happens to have money issues. He is just like any other "guru" on tv trying to sell you crap you don't need.
I don't need Dave Ramsey, and I don't need someone who is in the same boat as me telling me what I do and don't need to do.
In this day and age, credit is EVERYTHING. Even if you aren't using it, you need to re-establish it somehow. And you CAN use credit cards responsibly. That is what this board is for.
You need to wake up and realize that Dave Ramsey is making his millions off of people like you having them chase after a dream, that quite frankly, isn't really acheivable if you truly think about it.
if you make 30K a year, you can still save, still have some fun, and still have nice things if you are responsible. But to do some of the things that Dave Ramsey, your god, suggests, I highly DON'T recommend.....BUSY running my own credit repair services! Sorry I don't stop in so often any more!

The whole point to getting credit cards quickly after bankruptcy is to help repair the damage on your credit report that bankruptcy causes. Most people who go into BK have 10-80K of credit card debt. Coming out of BK you usually only get $300-500 first off which is totally managable and helpful for the rebuilding.Filed: 08/09/06

Hey mike9302, some of us gave up or lost our homes or autos to BK and someday we would like to have another home of our own or auto. You say we should save and pay cash? Well DUH, we need to re-establish our credit to prove that we can manage our finances well, stay with our means and show good repayment history because I haven't known anyone who was able to save the cash to buy a home without taking out a loan.....and we'll need a loan in a few years.
We have learned our lessons from our mistakes and I honestly believe that we'll never get ourselves into that kind of trouble again. And yes, there are those who are trying to get all of this credit and they'll get themselves into to trouble, but for the most part, we're smarter and wiser now and we'll use caution.
No offense man, but you can't come here barking as us about what we should and should not do.Last edited by BassBoy; 06-28-2006, 04:37 AM.Bankruptcy History:

Mike, part of it is for rebuilding a revolving credit line. The other part is for emergencies--true emergencies (i.e. death in the family and have to fly and rent a car).
The suggestion always flying around here is keep your balance low (20-30% of the max) and pay them off *almost* in full everytime. Pretty easily done just using the card for gas only for the month.
Hate to say it, but in this day and age, having a credit card is almost a necessity. You have to jump through major hoops to use a check--if they're even accepted (that's why I love my debit card). I hate to carry a lot of cash on me.*** THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE--ONLY A LAWYER CAN PROVIDE THAT. ***

Credit cards are not a necessity these days. I have no credit cards at all and I get by fine. I have rented cars with a check card and even booked a couple of hotel rooms for business trips. But I dont buy any financial books. I have read them in book stores but it is amazing how much people think credit cards are such a necessity. What ever happened to learning to live on what you make? I will never get another credit card again. I will save my free cash up every payday and I dont care what anyone says. If you have enough of a down payment saved up you can purchase a home without getting credit cards to build credit.

Geez, the forum has been getting some weird topics and trollers as of late. Here's what gets me is that most of our members stumbled upon this forum while browsing the web for help with BK or from a recommendation from a friend or family member.......so......how did someone who never filed BK or has all of this great advice to offer find a forum like this? Baffles me. And I don't mean the members who have come here, have never filed BK, but are taking the time to offer suggestions and such.Bankruptcy History:

Mike, i don't recall seeing any of your last 5 posts but have you filed bk and if so are you discharged? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but what you are saying is certainly not a fact. I didn't file bk to never have credit again. I filed to get myself together financially and manage my credit responsibly, and I have a few cards that I manage. It's a cold world without credit and even worse if you have bad credit. If we see anymore posts from you I hope they will be uplifting. If having no credit works for you that's great.Discharged 2/27/06, closed 6/1/06

BassBoy,
When you google Bankruptcy Forum, for better or worse, it's the first one on the list! ;) I wonder what he's selling? Or, maybe, it's just someone with too much time on their hands?*** THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE--ONLY A LAWYER CAN PROVIDE THAT. ***

My point exactely. People that have never filed BK or have this great advice to give are google searching for Bankruptcy Forums? If BK is the furthest thing from ever happening to you, then why sit down at the computer one day and say to yourself, "I'm going to Google BK Forums and register to become a member." C'mon now. No one with financial greatness or wisdom would ever do such a thing. They only do it to stir up the forum.Originally posted by anonymuseBassBoy,

I am not trying to sell anything and I have been in the same boat with lots of debt and I have realized that living with any debt is stupid. I got laid off from a company that shut down and moved somewhere else and was stuck with these bills I could not pay. Now that I am saving my money and debt free if I get laid off again sure it will be tough but I will have money saved up that will make it easier plus I wont have to worry about Visa breathing fire down my neck. Credit cards got you people to bankruptcy and now you are free and clear of debt but you want to run right back to it. Using credit means you are buying things you cant afford and I bet most of what you buy on the cards are not even a necessity. Sure some may be like groceries but most people wind up spending more with a card than paying cash. Cash is the way to go and you folks trying to get credit and starting to head right down the same road that screwed you up in the first place.
