Same account, Different companies

I have a collection on my credit for Providian twice. One under Providian and the other under Palisades. My question is this, once the credit card company sends your info to collection are they still suppose to report info to Equifax, Eperian, etc? Or, once they have turned your info over, they no longer handle your credit. I have settled for the card and it is showing the two above mention companies on my report. Is there anything I can do about this? I have sent in letters along with copies of the payments showing that the collection under Palisades is for Providian but no one at the credit company seems to feel one should be taken off.
