    The reason many bk lawyers want to be paid upfront is, post petition fee agreements get reviewed by the courts and can lead to problems.

      Wow...this post went in many directions I had not anticipated. Thanks to all who replied with constructive advice. After consideration, I am going to accept the gift from my relative and pay it off before filing.

      PS...I learned a long time ago that humor and sarcasm does not come through well in writing. Always leads to misconceptions and trouble. I'm sure no one meant any harm.

        "If it were me, I would scheme and work to..."

        As you can see, any sentence that begins that way can sound off some alarms.
