Finding a professional job after bankruptcy

I was wondering if there is anyone on this board that is in sales with a major corporation. The reason that I ask is that I am sales professional who has worked for 2 Fortune 500 companies. I was laid-off a few years ago and went and started my own business. Unfortunately, the business was not successful and I had to declare personal bankruptcy.

Now that I am about to receive my discharge I would like to go back into sales working for another Fortune 500 company. I am not sure whether I would be able to be hired by one of these companies in a sales capacity. Typically as a sales representative, there will be a credit check if I am to receive a company credit card and a company car.

I know that I would not be eligible for the company credit card and I am unsure as to whether I would qualify for a company car or not because of the bankruptcy.

If anyone has worked for a major corporation in a sales capacity after having declared personal bankruptcy, I would appreciate hearing from you!

    Thank You!

From my understanding it is against the law to not hire someone because of a BK. I was under the same concern in the last six months. I made it a point to mention it to my corporate recruiter who was regular employee. The credit and background check was more so to make sure you weren't a crook. People have bad luck sometimes, it happens. The corporate card has limitations on retail purchases, but travel has plenty of room. I would go for it. Good
    Luck

You should go for it. I am a sales professional, back in the "real" world after my dream business didn't work out. I had the same worries, but it was never mentioned. I do have a company car, cell phone, and credit card all provided to me.

The worst they can do is say no...

It may be against the law to not hire someone due to bankruptcy, but I don't believe that has anything to do with qualifying for a corporate credit card or a company car. Those are some serious perks.

I work for a corporation and I was able to keep my corporate credit card after filing Ch 13 because I had never used it for personal purchases and the payments on the card have always been on time. In your situation a lot could depend on whether the company that hires you guarantees the card and car themselves or sets the card and car up so you are the responsible party for making payments on one or both.

You aren't the only person to ever file bankruptcy to go to work in a large corporation. Worst case scenario...even if you are denied a corporate card and car, there are still ways around it. One of my colleagues lost his corporate card because he used it for personal charges and got way behind on payments (a big no-no), but our management has still figured out ways for him to reserve flights and hotels, and get rental cars when he travels.

Don't think of this as an all-or-none situation...it really depends on where you go to work, if they run a credit report, and how they feel about the results. You've been doing well since you filed - that's bound to show up on your credit report positively. Hang in there - don't let your prior bankruptcy tie you up mentally and keep you from going for the jobs you want. Good luck - please keep us posted on how your job hunt goes!

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

          06/01/06 - Filed Ch 13
          06/28/06 - 341 Meeting
          07/18/06 - Confirmation Hearing - not confirmed, 3 objections
10/05/06 - Hearing to resolve 2 trustee objections
01/24/07 - Judge dismisses mortgage company objection
          09/27/07 - Confirmed at last!
06/10/11 - Trustee confirms all payments made
          08/10/11 - DISCHARGED !

          10/02/11 - CASE CLOSED
Countdown: 60 months paid, 0 months to go
