Took my car back to dealer as part of my BK. Got the plates off. Do I need to take plates down to DMV to get it unregistered or can I just call them ?

Depends on the state. New York, for instance, will suspend your driving privileges, if you don't turn in the plates.

Why don't you just call DMV and ask?

Illinois you don't have to turn in your plates, they just expire.

I would call the DMV and ask for what to do.

Florida you must return the plates or send a letter, but they really want the plates.

Here in Iowa, if you turn in the plates you get a bit of a bounty on plates, and also, if you have paid your yearly registration sticker (wheel tax) they will pro-rate it and give you back the remainder.

regardless of whether you are required to return the plates, you MUST notify them if the "change in ownership" or else your license could be suspended for not carrying insurance on a car registered to you.....so its very important to act fast and find out the proper procedure.
