I keep getting calls from Allied from the last several weeks. I called them back on my "private cell number" to see who the heck they were. I'm only a couple months behind on AX and Citi both small acts and one month behind on BOA so nothing has gotten to a CA yet. I didnt know who there were and realized it was a CA when I called. I finally found out they were looking for someone with the same last name as mine. I told them it wasnt me and to stop calling. He kept on about recording this call blablabla and then I just hung up..
I did a Google search and found out this is common practice to bug folks that dont own them anything, has nothing to do with my problems.
The really weird thing is when I called from my cell I wasnt going to give them my name I just wanted to hear who they were. My cell is marked PRIVATE, but they gave me a name that sounded like my last name.. How in the world can they tell who called them from a number marked private ? Im perplexed !!!!

That's an easy one. You do not have caller ID privacy if you call back a toll-free number. And there are reverse lookup directories available for cell phone numbers. Use a pay phone if you want to protect your private number.

Per-Line Blocking. (Also known in some states as Complete Blocking.) Some states allow customers to select per-line blocking so that their phone number will be blocked for every call they make on a specific line unless they use the per-line unblocking option. If you want the number transmitted to the called party, dial *82 before you dial the number you are calling. You must redial *82 each time you want to unblock.

      Are there exceptions to blocking?

Several exceptions exist to the FCC blocking rules:

? 800 number/toll-free calls. You are not able to prevent the display of your phone number when you call 800, 866, 877, 888, and 900 numbers. The called party, which pays for the call, may be able to identify your phone number using Automatic Number Identification (ANI) technology. FCC rules, however, limit parties that own toll-free numbers from distributing the numbers identified through ANI.

        And...

collection agencies have special software which strips away the privacy of your cell phone and landlines when you call them, even if you call their regular phone number (not a 1-800 number).

So yes, if you are going to call a debt collector to find out who they are, use a pay phone or at least a phone that they have already called, so they won't get your private number.

p.s.-- I've dealt with Allied Interstate before, and they were looking for someone with a similar name. I sent them a cease and desist letter by certified mail and they never called me again.
        The world's simplest C & D Letter:
"I demand that you cease and desist from any communication with me."
Notice that I never actually mention or acknowledge the debt in my letter.
