what does this mean? Student loan

I was just taking a look at my credit report... in specific, I was looking at my student loans. I'll be discharged in 5 months and I want to go back to school. I believe I defaulted on my student loans. Firsttrust was the lender. Under this creditor, the credit report indicates: "Chapter 13 Bankruptcy withdrawn/Claim filed with government. Student Loan Permanently assigned to government".

What does this mean and how will that hurt my chances of getting a student loan for my graduate education?

    Thanks.

Typically in Ch 13 your student loans are placed in deferment for the length of your plan so there's no default for not paying them after filing. However, whoever does own your student loans is allowed to charge interest during the deferment time, so your loan total has grown during your active Ch 13 as well.

Contact your student loan lender (sounds like your loan was reassigned during your Ch 13 - not unusual - so start by contacting your original lender to find out who they sold your loan to). Then contact your new loan owner to get an accounting of your loan during your entire Ch 13 time. That will give you a place to start.

Don't wait until your Ch 13 is officially discharged - get started on this NOW. Your lender will expect you to start payments immediately the month your Ch 13 is officially discharged, so prepare ahead of time to make that first payment on time. You may not get a notice to pay - this varies by the lender - so don't be waiting for the lender to tell you to start making payments. Make that first re-started payment on time yourself - be proactive!

Filing bankruptcy does not prevent you from getting government student loans - see http://www.finaid.org/questions/bankruptcy.phtml for all the details.
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

Thanks for your response. It looks like firsttrust transferred it to ecmc who has just transferred it to Roundtop or something... I'm so confused. I guess I could start with First trust and then go from there... I hope they are able to put me in a payment plan right after the discharge. We obviously can't pay the remaining balance upfront.

Mine were transferred back to Arkansas Student Loan Authority, the original people approving the loan, after my bk was completed. They then transferred it back to Edfinancial within 4 months of my closing. So if your state has such an animal that originally funded your loan I would check with them.
Some of my payments didn't get posted properly, and the check for December's payment is still floating out in lala land somewhere, but I have been paying it on time, even adding extra when I can. Student loan is the only ongoing debt we have right now other than mortgage, but with the way things are going in the economy right now, I want to have as few payments as possible.
