    Attention Dog and Cat Lovers

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the companies web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'
True information about the mulch can be found here - http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoa.htm <http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoa.htm> This site gives the following information:

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theo bromine'.

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks Just a word of caution check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theo bromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine , a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

No, I haven't seen that yet, but probably will later one. I have seen some that weigh in at about 20. That's not healthy.

Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs especially, and mine would eat it right down if they could get it.... they love the smell.... any kind of chocolate.

And yes, there are pics of the 44 lb cat on www.drudgereport.com. His family lost their home in foreclosure and he showed up at the animal shelter. They thought it was a girl and called her "Princess Chunky" or something like that.

WELL, she is a he, and was on the Regis Show this morning and on the Good Morning America show....

          She's up for adoption.....

OMG how sad. I am one of those nuts who treats cats and dogs as well as I do people, lol.

My children swear I love the dog more than them!

Since we are on this topic... is my cat weird because he craves salad greens? He loves fresh spinach, bibb lettuce, even parsley! He is trained not to go on the kitchen counters but man, whenever I'm making a salad I have to make sure I don't leave the area because he will quickly jump up, grab a leaf or two, and immediately come down and hide to eat it. LOL

I don't think it's any dietary deficiency because he's on the Science Diet as recommended by the vet. I HAVE bought him "cat grass" at the pet store but he snubs that! Won't touch it and eventually it dies and I throw it away.

A cat on a diet.. now that's funny. Except the poor 44-lb. cat recently in the news NEEDS to go on a diet, poor thing!

I'm glad to know my cat isn't the only one who grabs leaves and runs.

Cats don't have the thirst sensation as humans and dogs do. They get their water primarily from the food they eat and cat dry food does not contain this water.

Maybe they are eating the greens for the water content? If they seem to like them, I would start mixing their food with a few greens.

Cats are so damn smart, lol.

Seems to me someone goofed on this one. How can no one that works for this company not realize chocolate is harmful to a dog and not know most dogs would have been right on that chocolate taste. I have 3 dogs and I know everyone of them would have been eating the heck out of chocolate flavored mulch and then I would have been locked up in a luny bin cause my pugs are as much my kids as my kids are and if that mulch could kill a big dog imagine what it would have done to my little pugs.

I sure hope someone is doing something about this. It worries me how many other pet owners will lose their beloved pet.

Yea, and putting a disclosure on the bag that it could harm animals is NOT enough. It is an outside product.

That's like putting a bottle of whisky on the refreshment table at an AA meeting and labeling it.....not to be used if you have a drinking problem! LOL

Ah yes, Princess Chunk. He (yes he) seems like a doll. Did you notice that they found the original owner who said they just couldn't care for him anymore. That pisses me off.
