    Money for Christmas gifts

My grandmother gave my husband myself and our son 3 checks each for 300.00 each for Christmas. They are personal checks and my bank won't let me cash them since I do not have the money in there. I cannot deposit them because then it would show as income , correct? I do not want them calling her or knowing anything about her or anything so what should I do?

I can wait until next friday to cash them when we get paid but my husband is off this weekend and no more until after Christmas and we wanted to do some Christmas shopping.

Can you take them to your grandmother's bank and cash them? They might charge you a fee ($5 for most banks) but that won't show up in your records for the Trustee.
    12/05/08 - filed pro se
01/27/09 - case dismissed and closed - 02/24/09 - case reopened and dismissal vacated
    04/01/09 - new 341 scheduled
    6/02/09 - DISCHARGED!!!

I could but it is in another state. I tried the bank here that she banks at but they said it is not the same bank even though they have the same name? not sure what they mean...

If I waited and cashed them at my bank would it show up since I cashed them instead of deposited them?

It is very possible that since your account number will be printed on the backside and a picture of the check both sides are taken, it is tracable. That being said, I would suggest you take that chance and use YOUR check for Christmas food, and the OTHER checks for the gifts. Food is exempt and neccessary. Three hundred bucks for Christmas? I would doubt any Trustee with a heart would baulk at that. 'Hub
If I knew it all, would I be here?? Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.

I wrote that wrong..we each got 300 so 900 total. My husband cashed his at our bank and so now I am freaking out since they will be traceable. My grandma is older and I do not want her knowing we are filing as she will be worried about us and it is just better that she does not know.

You would be just cashing the check, not depositing it. When you go to cash a check from someone else at your bank, they check to see if you have the funds available in your account to guarantee the amount of the check. The only time you may have an issue with one of the cashed checks and your account is if it bounces on the other end. But your risk with that appears low.

Flamingo, if I understand the Op correctly, that was three 300 dollar checks. I would space them several “clearing” days apart. Even so, I don’t think the Trustee will care as this is a family once a year Christmas gift. If he does, the Grinch will get him. ‘Hub

She said her hubby already cashed his at their bank...so she just has to ensure there are funds in there to cover hers when she cashes it. I don't know how old the son is but his is not an issue unless they need to cash it for him. LOL at "Grinch." I would have to say he would be "Scrooge!" :-)

Why not cash them at Walmart? They charge about $3 to cash a check.

I tried to at the bank in wal mart and they said they don't cash personal checks unless I had an account with them.

My son is only one so his check is made out to him..not sure how that would work either

I agree with the other poster. Go to the service desk and get them to cash the check. Actually, I have been in line behind people that were cashing their checks at the register, but it was a paycheck, not a personal check.
As to your son, I have received checks in the past for my kids. I always signed their name, then signed mine right below it before I cashed it.

Wal-Mart only cashes payroll and government issued checks.

I can cash it at a check cashing place but they have a certain percentage and I have to wait until Monday
