    declined job b/c of BK?

I'm not looking for a job currently, but don't know how much longer i want to stay with my current employer.

I'm looking to file for BK in May 2009. I am wondering if anyone has been declined a job because they file for BK?

I have always seen on job applications where it asks if you have filed for BK in the last 10 years. Just wondering how much bearing it actually has, if you have the education and experience for the job?

    Any answers are appreciated!

    Thanks

It would be downright illegal for them to tell you in your face that you weren't hired because of your bankruptcy. If your application asks the question, and your answer is "yes" - and you don't get hired - all they will say that they hired someone else with a better background/qualifications. They will NEVER admit that they didn't hire you because of your filing.

Do a search on here as to filing BK and either trying to obtain a job afterwards or in a job and filing. There are numerous postings. A BK on your credit reports can prevent you from getting a job.

Let's not be fear mongers here...that statement is too broad.

A BK is a factor in the decision process for SOME employers. The fact is, nearly every person that has filed BK has a job and can get a job.

If the job is one that requires you to be bonded, then yes bk can prevent you from getting such a job if you as a result cannot be bonded. (This includes many bank jobs, real estate jobs, etc).

I had to be bonded to become a Notary in my state and did not have a problem (in 2005, filed in 2002). The problem arises if the position encompasses handling financial accounts, handling checks or cash or working in a bank/financial institiation where one has access to others accounts/money. Employers are worried about theft and embezzlement and unfortunately folks in BK are given the stigma of not being able to handle their finances even though we know that is not true for many, but the entire class suffers. Usually one will be told that a background and credit check will be done after an interview is finished and their decision will be based on that and other factors included in your resume. If they see the BK in your history, it could be a factor in them not hiring you. That's just the way it is.

Note that I said can prevent you, I didn't say it absolutely would prevent you.

Bonding laws differ from state to state as well, as do regulations in Financial and Real Estate laws. Those are the two areas you are most likely to suffer refusal of jobs if you have a bk. It is still possible to get jobs in those areas, it just takes someone examining your honesty about it and deciding to take a chance.

If you are in an interview and they mention a credit check will be done, then its best to be honest and clean and mention you have had a bankruptcy, even if it is not asked for on the application. Explain the circumstances that led to the bankruptcy and how you feel you've made changes so that you have a control over all your finances now.
