    Chase credit card

I had a Wamu credit card that I received after filing bankruptcy which I loved. Chase took them over earlier this year and I continued using the card and paying off monthly. I think I carried a balance only one time and even paid off the balance a week later. Today I went to the store and tried to use the card and it was not approved. I called Chase and the customer service rep answers "How can I help you on the closed account?" Well that right there answered my question. They closed my account! Has this happened to anyone else?

It's common, in fact. The rarity is when a card survives a bankruptcy filing without being closed.
Credit card issuers, in the folder of terms no one ever reads until something surprises them, reserve the right to close your account at any time for any (or no) reason.

After Chase bought WAMU I immediately applied for another credit card in case Chase closed my account. So far they haven't closed mine.

Thanks Logan. Do you mind if I ask what card you applied for? I do not want to apply and get rejected and carry that on my credit report. I just checked my credit score and it is fairly high close to 700.

Juniper Bank. They approved me for 6K then reduced my credit line to $1150 a few months later.

I also have a Capital One card.

Did you have a balance when they closed the account?

To the OP; what occurred with you is that (1) you did not use the card for a period of time so they reevaluated your account and closed it, or (2) some indicator had them check your records and they decided to close it. Many people were worried at the time of the transfer to Chase of losing their accounts. Most seemed to have stayed in place (ours did) but unfortunately yours did not. You should have asked for a reason whey you called as to why they closed it. In this economy, many people have seen accounts closed or limits reduced by creditors.

Yes Flamingo, and even here on this board, I am seeing the Credit Card companies PUSHING people who could have just made it by, into bk. They are cutting their own through ts. These are wise businessmen? 'Hub

Hey logan just curious about your cap one card... I just got mine last week and wanted to see how your doing with it so far? Have they lowered your limit? And what did they start you with in terms of credit limit?

It started out at 3K and raised it to $3500 after 90 days and that's where it has stayed. It is my primary card and I've had no problems.

It was a Wamu card that I received in September of last year. I filed for bankruptcy in February of last year. I waited about 6 months before I applying for the card even though it seemed every week I was getting mailers from Wamu and CapitalOne. Wamu approved me right away but CapitalOne said they couldn't make a decision at the time. When I finally got the explanation for the denial it was because they had my date of birth wrong. The credit report did NOT have the date wrong but somehow CapitalOne had that I was born in 1996 which is ridiculous. I sent them proof of my age etc but was never given the card and all their mailings stopped all together. It also caused an extra ding in my credit report because I was denied. (I think I posted this story on another thread)
Okay back to your question. I used the Wamu card sparingly and paid it off every month. I did have a small balance on my card when they closed it but I haven't even received my statement yet. When I asked customer service about why they closed it she just read off a script to check my credit report. Well I know Chase was one of the companies that I filed bankruptcy but I still think it unfair. I had the card almost a year and always paid early and paid the entire amount. I didn't even need to use the card I would just use it so it would report on my credit report. I think I will open a secured savings account and see how that goes.

Why would a credit card denial hurt your credit score? It should only show an inquiry and nothing about a denial. I applied and was denied a Banana Republic about a month before I applied for a mortgage and my credit report was virtually the same as a credit pull 3 months earlier.

Well I had been monitoring my credit score and on my credit report it shows that I applied for CapitalOne credit twice, maybe 3 times. Those dings lowered my credit score. I am not sure at the moment. Just having one of those days.

It should only be a short term hit but I understand your frustration.

                              Hey Logan,
This is funny. Today I received a preapproval for a Juniper card. I am scared to apply but it looks very similar to the CapitalOne card. Are they related?
