    Young man looking for advice.

Hello all. This is my first posting to the forum, although I have been reading it for a couple of weeks now. I've never filed for bankruptcy and hopefully never will. I make a decent living doing something I enjoy, and I have no payments other than my rent, storage, and internet.

I've kept it this way most of my life for a reason. No payments means the freedom to move when and where I like, not needing to worry about losing my job and such. If I wanted to I could live for a year combing the beack or on a mountain in Tibet. I've seen debt destroy lives and families and I have no interest in that. The only loans I would ever allow myself to get would be for a house, college or business.

I had an incedent with my bank sometime last year, in which a money order for $1700 bounced. They held me liable for the amount, which I did not have, and ended up closeng my account. I am now unable to get a credit card in any way, nor am I able to even open a bank account.

I'm fairly young, 23, and I am looking for tips from people who have experienced more than I have. Ways to establish good credit and some things to look out for. I would like to get a credit card for emergencies. My landlord doesn't report the income from his properties, so sadly my monthly rent does not appear on my credit listing.

Any advice would be greatly welcomed, I've read a few of the threads here and you all seem very level headed and willing to help. I especially enjoyed the thread about the death of the American dream.

just curious...why/how did a money order bounce for heavens sake and why did the bank hold you liable? filingonmyown has good suggestions...do try one of those companies; I would be surprised if one of them didnt give you a credit card.

It was a Nigerian scammer trying to purchase a laptop I had for sale. The money order was fraudulent. I've been told by Chase bank that if I owe another bank money in this manner (The outstanding amount was charged to my account, creating a 1700 dollar overdraft) I will not be able to get a checking account anywhere at any bank until it is payed back in full.

Is this true? Saving moey would be much easier if I could get a bank account again.

You also need to report this to the Secret Service. This happened to a co-worker last week when she tried to sell a couch in a local SC paper. A man called and said he wanted to purchase a $300 couch and the shipper was in Nigeria, she received two $1500 money orders before she had a chance to respond to his request. Thankfully she didn't deposit them!
If I didn't have anything to worry about, I would worry about that...

How does one go about doing that? They arent exactly in the phone book.

Is there anywhere I might be able to get a bank account in the mean time?

Go to FBI.Gov, find your local FBI office and they will direct you to Secret Service. You definitely need to pursue this, you may be able to claim some sort of victim compensation.
If I didn't have anything to worry about, I would worry about that...
