Hello all. This is my first posting to the forum, although I have been reading it for a couple of weeks now. I've never filed for bankruptcy and hopefully never will. I make a decent living doing something I enjoy, and I have no payments other than my rent, storage, and internet.
I've kept it this way most of my life for a reason. No payments means the freedom to move when and where I like, not needing to worry about losing my job and such. If I wanted to I could live for a year combing the beack or on a mountain in Tibet. I've seen debt destroy lives and families and I have no interest in that. The only loans I would ever allow myself to get would be for a house, college or business.
I had an incedent with my bank sometime last year, in which a money order for $1700 bounced. They held me liable for the amount, which I did not have, and ended up closeng my account. I am now unable to get a credit card in any way, nor am I able to even open a bank account.
I'm fairly young, 23, and I am looking for tips from people who have experienced more than I have. Ways to establish good credit and some things to look out for. I would like to get a credit card for emergencies. My landlord doesn't report the income from his properties, so sadly my monthly rent does not appear on my credit listing.
Any advice would be greatly welcomed, I've read a few of the threads here and you all seem very level headed and willing to help. I especially enjoyed the thread about the death of the American dream.
