Forum Rules (Everyone Must Read!!!) (updated: 04/28/2015)

Welcome to the Bankruptcy Forum. Bankruptcy (BK) Forum is known as BKForum.com and will be referred to as BKF hereinafter. In order to ensure a long term success of our vibrant community, we have established certain rules and guidelines to which everyone must adhere to. Please take your time to carefully read our rules, before you start to participate in the community.

Things you agree to do:
BKFORUM.com (BKF) users agree to use the search function before starting a new thread. This prevents duplicate discussions and allows for better organized topics.

All BKF users agree to read the sticky posts which may be available at the top of a forum page. These Sticky posts often contain valuable information. They may also outline more rules and guidelines specific for that particular forum, stickies are put in place by that forums moderator(s) or admin(s).

Things you agree not to do:

All BKF users agree not to call people names or write a post simply to make a personal attack, or get a negative reaction; this behavior is not allowed on our forum. The use of derogatory language aimed at anyone will be severely dealt with. There is no need to agree with each other, or to even like each other. However, by signing onto BKForum.com you agree to treat each member and guest with the respect they deserve. No threats or personal attacks will be allowed.

All BKF users agree not to discuss, engage, or encourage any behavior or activity which violates the law. Discussion of drugs, violence, murder, theft, vandalism, fraud or any other issue which could be used to help individuals break the law is strictly forbidden.

All BKF users agree not to "bump" old threads, unless there is a specific benefit to the community by doing so. But in most cases, please don't post in very old threads, instead start new threads.

All BKF users agree not to attempt/use another members account. It is against BKF rules to use any account other than your own. Impersonating another member will result in an immediate ban. It is also against the rules to open more than one account in your own name without permission from a moderator or administrator. If you have been banned for any reason, it is against the rules to open another account. If you were banned temporarily and you are caught using another account you will be banned permanently. Choosing a moniker which is similar in either sound or spelling as a moderator or administrator is strictly forbidden.

All BKF users agree not to abuse or mistreat moderators or administrators. It is against BKF rules to post any information regarding bans or any other action taken by a member of the moderating or administrative team. If you wish to discuss bans or warnings please do so via PM. To place a complaint against a moderator, send a PM to a super moderator. All Moderators are equal, any decision made by a moderator must be adhered to. If a moderator tells you something you do not like, do not go to another moderator looking for a different answer. If you are caught doing this you will be banned. The moderators work as a team and respect the decisions made by their peers and will help enforce them unless an administrator tells them differently.
If you have an issue with how the forum is run, then notify one of our administrator and we will look into the situation. We have in the past and still do appreciate any input that you offer this forum. But critical input and/or judgmental postings towards the staff will result in you getting banned.

You agree not to copy any material/post/content from BKF without written permission from our head administrator .

By posting on this forum you agree to these terms and conditions, including any punishment deemed appropriate by moderators or administrators in the event of an offense.

Administrators/Moderators can change these rules at any time without prior notice.

  • Spending the tax refund - questions

Whenever we get the refund (prior to filing), we plan to spend it on:
    1. Quarterly federal tax payment (Husband is self-employed)
    2. Quarterly state tax payment
    3. Orthodontia for our son (he has teeth growing sideways, not down; we have been waiting it out hoping that it would self-correct like one side did, but it has not, and it's been over the 6 months they suggested waiting)
    4. Possibly paying utilities - can you "pay ahead" a month or two? Or can you only pay what is current? For instance, our garbage bill is $25/month -- can we pay say 3 or 4 months' worth, or just one?

    Your plan is safe.
Well, I did. Every one of 'em. Mostly I remember the last one. The wild finish. A guy standing on a station platform in the rain with a comical look in his face because his insides have been kicked out. -Rick

      Thank you --

Is it okay then to pay ahead? I've got a horrendous insurance premium of $440/month for just myself. It'd be nice if I could pay say 3 months of that, so I don't have to worry about it for a few.

horrendous insurance premium of $440/month for just myself. ...good grief!! I will stop complaining about mine right now....

Since the tax payments are quarterly, I think paying ahead a quarter would be OK. We did on a couple bills, but they were small like the garbage.

Need someone paying the big bucks utilities from the Northeast to chime in....anyone pay ahead a couple grand?

          Hey Tom
Wanna feel REALLY good? Our insurance went up to 1400/mo for the two of us.
          No dental or vision.
As to utilities for the self employed, I believe another self employed poster from the NE told me he prepaid his no prob. I would like to think (hope/pray)that when your income vacillates and you may not actually be able to expect anything, that prepaying utilities and mortgage would be acceptable.

Yeah, or go uninsured, as we have done since September.
I posted recently about starting college just so we could get reasonable health ins. Worth looking into if anyone is in a similar position.

Yes, to get health insurance at greatly reduced group rates- seems to be my only option here in the land of high prices. Can't get it thru AARP. chamber of commerce, or any of the other groups other states offer.

exactly why we left!!!!! and never looked back...the cost of everything was terrible. i know my daughter to cover her husband and their two kids it cost them over 2k...so they couldn't do it...who can?? they moved out of state also and now everything is fine with the healthcare! TG!!!

oh...to the OP...we were advised to use EVER dime of our refund and it was quite large that year since we donated a ton of things to local and state charities...(we of course were becoming homeless in nj...but we could at least get a tax deduction for giving everything away to legit places!)...so the trustee didn't even ask what we did with it...not one word.

                        Another question here --

My husband has yearly business expenses that come due in Jan/Feb. We have been holding off on paying them until tax refunds arrive. One is $540 the other is $414. Would those be okay to pay from the refunds you think? So far we have only paid my health insurance, we are sitting on the rest until the other refund arrives, then we'll pay the quarterly tax payments and my son's orthodontia.

If it's not okay to pay the business expenses, we can juggle to pay that out of the account now and then do things like make the house payment from the refund, to make it "legit" -- if anyone believes the business expenses would raise an eyebrow.

You should be fine on paying those business expenses. Just save the receipts. (Also don't forget to include those yearly expenses in your filing)
