Can relatives really be forced to pay debt in PA?

I was reading this article about how the AG in PA is going after collection agencies that are going after the relatives of indigent debtors. It cites a colonial-era law, but doesn't specifically mention if that law is no longer valid! Hopefully this was just sloppy journalism!

The Pennsylvania attorney general is suing a debt collector for allegedly pursing debtors' family members for debts they're not responsible for paying.

Yes, it is current law. http://www.palrb.us/pamphletlaws/200...0/act/0043.pdf

It isn't just any family member that can be held responsible. It is limited to spouses, parents and children.

Do a search for "filial support laws" and you find that many states have similar laws.

ETA: While the PA law was a colonial era law and always valid, it was re-codified in 2005 and moved to a different part of the law.

Filed Chap 13 April 2010. Discharged May 2015.
$143,000 in debt discharged for $36,500, including attorneys fees. Money well spent!
