How do I find out if there are liens against my home property?

    I am in NJ.

Do I call the county ?
    Or the local municipality?

    Is there a charge?
Is this called a title search?

    What would be found?
    The mortgage?

What if there is a lien and the debt has been paid?

(sorry to be so clueless !) thanks.
Much thanks for all the support and information I receive on this forum.

Yes you can ask for a title search and it costs you money to do one. However, if you know an attorney or title agent they might do what we used to call a 'pencil search' - to see if there are any liens and encumberances against your property. The 'pencil search' is a nominal cost.

You can also informally check yourself online under the Clerk of Courts (its called that here in Fl) and put in your address. An easier way might be by putting in your name first. This is a little bit cumbersom and might not pick up all the records, but it is a good head start.
