equifax sent us a letter what do you think?

We applied for our free credit report from Equifax last week and today in the mail we got a letter from them stating this:

we have recv'd your request concerning your annual free credit report from equifax and we are looking forward to assisting u. however the information you provided as proof of your identity does not match your information currently on file??????? therefore to protect your credit info. we must ask for some additional information in order to verify your identity and address.

a copy of one item in each of the categories below is needed to verify your identity and address. The item you choose in the identity category MUST contain your ssn and the item you choose in the address category MUST contain your current mailing address.

    they want:
    social security card
    pay stub with ssn
    w2 form
    and
    drivers license
    rental lease agreement/house deed
    paystub with address
    utility bill

They want photocopies we send with small writing like w2 or drivers lic. to be enlarged.

what the heck is this all for??????????????????????????????????This is scarey!

my husband got the same letter. He had a fraud alert on his report, due to us doing so many changes, and fixing problems....his name and his dad's are the same...and thier reports are messed up.. ..what a joke!! We looked and they said the alert will fall off in 90 days...so we said screw it and waited the 90 days (we didnt' want to fork over all that info either) and they never asked for info again. Now his report is free of anything.
Check to see it that may be an issue for you.
    good luck.

Just another way for them to get around following the law and to drag stuff out.................It's a PITA..........I hate when they pull crap like this!

I would call them and ask them WHY they need this pertinent information and ask them if they are soooooooo concerned about identity theft, why would they ask you to send vital information like that in the US mail?

How do i check to see if that is the issue?

we use privacymatters (we can check our reports daily and have a monitoring) and it stated it was on the report for 90 days, and was to fall off in April 19, 2006...and sure enough it fell off......go figure...I have no idea how these stupid credit report agencies work!!!

            good luck

pink_amulet, are you happy with privacymatters? we were thinking of finding a place that we could pull ours from online too. would that affect the mailed version in anyway being sent yearly?

                    We are happy!!
HOWEVER....The deal we signed up under is no longer available so I hear . We pay $14.95 a month, (that is for me AND my hubby...NOT $14.95 each)... to get 24 hour a day monitoring and anytime access to our reports (we can see all three reports). We ONLY get our TransUnion score (not all three), as Privacymatters is through Truecredit which is part of TransUnion.

The only thing I wish is that we could get all 3 scores, I know some people can get all htree, but I don't know what company they go through...and i don't know if they are paying person or not. I like the fact we pay one low fee for both of us! !

I talked to a rep once at privacymatters, and she said they are running specials all the time, the fees range from $9.95 a month to $39.95..man I wish I would have signed up under $9.95...LOL You will have to check them out and see that the rates are now.

                    good luck

No it does not affect the yearly free ones. I have still gotten my yearly free one, even with being signed up for Privacymatters. I went through the annual credit report site.

I got the same thing from Equifax and Experian when I tried to get my free annual report. Transunion gave me no trouble at all. When we pulled dh's report, Transunion and Experian gave him his report immediately, but Equifax refused to even ask security questions. I did all of this online. We filed in Jan, went to court in March and were discharged in May. Our reports are a friggin mess, and dh's address isn't correct. Ugh.
I'm going to look into privacy matters, thanks!
