  • 8 months in...going well...but does it get easier?

We are 8 months in and our budget is going well. We are able to save just a bit every month and have been able to handle the few house repairs, car repairs, etc. But I'm still so uneasy. I always feel like I'm missing something and on the verge of an emergency...and then being dismissed because we can't keep up with payments. I wish I could handle this better and just go with the flow... :/

Also, we are talking about expanding our family...but worried that the increased expense will be greater than our payment. What would happen then? Do we postpone those plans or just give up the whole idea of another baby?

I worry about handling the nerves/stress over the next 4.5 do you handle it? This whole process might do me in and then I won't be able to enjoy the debt free future.

One key to success is to get into a rhythm and to not get distracted. I actually miss being in my Chapter 13 before I converted to Chapter 7. I was very good with buying food at discounts (thanks to Publix and the BOGO items) and refraining from eating out every day. That was a huge eye opener just in the food category. Additionally, family nights became "make your own pizza" and "movie night" where everyone was at home. We had relatively cheap annual passes to Busch Gardens in Florida so if we needed that excitement we could do that at a cost of less than $12/per person per month!

Another key is that you MUST save money. This is just a fact. If you can't save money then you won't survive. I had two major incidents right after filing including new tires for the car and a broken sewer line (neither covered by insurance). Life happens and you must be prepared.

As justbroke stated, saving money is key. Does it get easier? For us, the answer was yes. Living paycheck to paycheck and still not having enough was stressful. After filing the calls stopped, the bills were getting paid, on time, and our plan allowed some savings each month. The first year was, as for most, the most difficult. Every decision made while in the plan was based on finances. It was a way of life for 5 years and something that I have carried on since discharge. Stressful at times but life is like that. I looked at as if I were at the top of a mountain, at the time we filed. No pun intended. The first step was downhill and each and every one thereafter was getting us closer to the bottom. Granted, there was an occasional step up when a situation comes up, and they will, but being prepared for it was better than being blindsided. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. You have made it 8 months! Look how far you've come from where you were. There are a lot of successful completions on this forum and with 8 months under your belt, it sounds to me like another success story in the making. Expanding one's family will always be a financial decision whether in a 13 or not and you will have to decide what's best.

Wishing you the best and remember that there is probably someone on this forum that has been through something similar and willing to share.

I am one year in to my Chapter 13, and yes it does get easier, but that comes with some work as the others have pointed out. For myself, using an envelope style budgeting system has helped tremendously. I personally use You Need a Budget, the web version. It really opened my eyes to where I was wasting money. Hang in there, I know it is tough at times, but you will be better off at the end, and will end up gaining a lot of knowledge about what you can overcome and how to handle finances better.

Thanks for mentioning YNAB. I am checking out the "free 34 days" trial now. I've tried things like this in the past, and I've always found it cumbersome and I've given up and just stuck to my own spreadsheets. It would be great it this one was different!
