Our Pathfinder (1992) was stolen on The 23rd right from our driveway! We live in a nice area so it was totally unexpected! Of course, we only carry liability on it. We decided prior to bk that we couldn't afford payments on our newer ford truck, so we used what savings we had to pay cash and buy this pathfinder & turned back our nice truck to the bank. My hubby put new brakes on the pathfinder recently too...all cash out of pocket. Now we have to scramble to buy a new vehicle that FITS us all (we have a utility truck, but we also have 3 kids). It sucks looking for cars in the $2000 range, even that is more than technically we can afford. I hate that we can't finance a vehicle because I really want something that is safe & reliable! Then, to top it all off, my van's driver side power window wouldn't go up yesterday. Hubby got it up, but now I'm afraid there's more to come with it, but I am thankful at least we have our van. It sucks because we are only 1 year in to a 5 year & I was just getting used to my budget & feeling confident we could do this.

you can certainly finance a vehicle. It is possible to take on new debt while in a chapter 13, you just have to be able to justify it as truly necessary...having a reliable vehicle to get to work would certainly be a reasonable justification.
Granted, you won't be able to go overboard on the purchase price. Definitely talk to your attorney about your options for financing a new vehicle.Oct 9, 2007 - Filed my Chapter 13!

Update: Well, we got the Pathfinder back, it was found less than 5 miles from our home parked at a gas station! Everything IN it was gone--even the kids' car seats, but they didn't trash it. We filed a claim with our home owners for the contents that were taken since it was locked and in our driveway, we have a deductible, but should be able to replace some of the important stuff. We had to pay a $74 impound fee, insurance covered the towing expenses. I'm just glad it's back & runs!! One icky thing that happened was that hubby left a check book in there---closing the account at the bank has been pure HELL since we run everything through it. I think we're done now & hopefully the idiots that took it won't be stupid enough to use the checks.Chapter 13 Filed: 2/7/07 Confirmed: 5/1/07 Discharged: 3/2/2012 Closed: 6/2/2012
