Just now found out that not only do i need brakes but i need a whole new motor. They said it would be around 6000 for a new motor. The problem is, is that its a work vehicle and with out it i cant work. I do have credit left with sears and will have them do the brake work. I dont have the 6000 for a new motor though. Does anyone know if i take a loan out against my husbands annuity plan at work if that would be alright and if the payments to pay it back would be accepted in a 13 plan. I guess what i am trying to say is if that money for the loan would mean less money for the creditors. The other thing is they would give me a check to deposit in my checking account and then in turn i would make out a check to the auto place. Would they consider that income? Thanks again

Why do you need a new motor? Does your vehicle still run? If so you probably don't need a new motor. Maybe a tuneup or rebuild could be done for a few hundred. It could be bad ignition wires ($30 to replace), and if you didn't know any better they could tell you the engine needed replacing. How many miles on the vehicle? Anything under 250,000 should not need a new engine, and 500,000 miles on an engine is not unheard of.
Unless the engine has literally blown up and has seized with major mechanical damage, it is always cheaper to just repair it. Worn bearings and valves or valve sleeves are the most common high mileage problems - and all replacable for much less than a engine replacement. If your roof leaks, you don't rip down the house and build a new one - you repair the leak.
Same with the brakes - replacing the pads may be all you need. I think your mechanic is taking advantage of your lack of mechanical skills to scare you and make more money. This is common with some garages. I can replace my brakes pads for $20. One place quoted me $500 for the same thing, because they wanted to replace all related perfectly good brake parts. They have a huge markup on the parts plus the labor, so the more they can replace, the more they make. And when it's brakes they always use the scare tactic of "protecting your family" to replace unnecessary parts. It is very effective with mothers, and they know it.
I would get an inspection/estimate from someone who does not run a garage for profit - maybe an auto school or a diagnosis place, or a private mechanic you can trust (if there is such a person left.)“When fascism comes to America, it’ll be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross” — Sinclair Lewis

The reason i first brought in was because there was no oil pressure and it was ticking. They pulled the motor apart and there were shavings from the bearings and lots of sludge in the oil pan. When they drove it, thats when they heard the noise from the wheel and checked that out and found that i needed wheel bearings, brakes, and rotors. I did know i needed wheel bearings, i been having noises now from the wheels for a while now. They said its pretty bad, but they are going to try something to see if maybe i can at least go alittle longer , but they said its no guarentee and it might only last a day, a week , a month, who knows. The only way i could pay for the motor is to take from my husbands annuity plan threw work. Thanks again

Another option is to buy a used engine from a junkyard, this is commonly refered to as a pull-out. There are lots of good cars that get totaled in wrecks with low/medium mileage. www.car-parts.com is a website that lots of junkyards use to list there stuff. It is fairly common practice for poor folk to just replace an old old blown up engine with one that has 60k miles. Much less expensive, the other thing is to find an independant shop to do the work, ask around and find out who people you know have used. If there are car enthusist web sites for your type of vehicle or in your area ask them for recomendations. If it were a miata I could point you in the right direction. Hope this helps.Filed 6/2005
