So Hurricane Ike.... I live in La Marque Texas which is a coastal area of Texas in a large flood zone. It's set to hit just south of us, which means we'll get the dirty side of the storm. If this happens the surge will put my house in about 8 ft of water. The house was built in 1939 and the owner doesn't have home owner's insurance as they've owned the property FOREVER. Why the hell didn't I get renter's insurance? I really don't want to have to start over all over again.

Oh, my. I would be trying to get every thing to higher ground that I could. And pack up the most important stuff now to take with you should you need to evacuate. Or at least have it in a pile so you don't forget something.
Good luck, and will be praying for you in the coming days.Chapter 13 filed -8/12/04

So far the projections are for Corpus Cristi, though I watch Galveston, as it is my second home because of the Tall Ship ELISSA. So I know where La Marque is.
Here is Galveston's website, with their warnings about Hurricane Ike front and center:
I wish I could be there to help you out. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Just looked at the map, and have to add this... I was so thankful during Gustav that my former son in law had moved his family away from Houma earlier this summer. Well, they live in a suburb of Houston
, so looks like they will be in the storm this time too. Hopefully they will be ok, since they are a bit more inland than you are.
And the latest track looks so similar to Gustav, projected to go north into Oklahoma and curve over into Arkansas, so we may see the effects also.(still trees down on the sides of the roads around here)
Hope you are ok during the storm, and are able to protect your most precious things. Some things are just irreplaceable, the rest is just stuff when it gets down to it.
Promise I will still be praying and thinking of you.Chapter 13 filed -8/12/04

The new forecasts are showing it hitting just south of us. They've been shifting north all day..
I am really starting to stress about this. I've been told that they are going to issue a mandatory evacuation for the part of Harris County that I work in so if I went to work I wouldn't be able to get back home. I think they might be closing my plant anyway to anyone but required personnel.. Tomorrow we are going to get ready to evac, because 4 of our neighboring cities have already been ordered a mandatory evacuation and we were included as a voluntary. Tomorrow I think that will be changed to mandatory as well. Jeff Masters of Wunderground is predicting a Category 4 and so is the National Hurricane Center... this is going to be a big one.
Please keep the Texas Gulf Coast in your prayers. And Elissa, though she's already been moved, I assume.
Side note: my dad is the president of the gulf coast yacht broker's association and he has served as honorary crew on the Elissa and I've been able to sail on her a few times. Hi Heather, I am so glad that you are safe. I hope all is reasonably well with the rest of the family. Can you let us know where you are so we can watch the news for you? Ch13 Houston, KHOU.com have live video feeds, as do others. We have been watching all weekend. BTW, court will NOT be in session in Houston or Galveston for at least the coming week.
Please take care and be SAFE all. The worst days for lack of safety is AFTER the storm has passed.

Hang in there; you will do fine. Just remember that the most DANGEROUS part of any storm is the days of cleanup AFTER the storm has passed.
Be very careful of any generator and/or power saws. Several deaths after Andrew '92, were because of someone with a generator, powered it up and plugged it into the house. This backwards electrical feed killed several Utitlty men trying to fix the downed power lines in those areas."To go bravely forward is to invite a miracle."
