exactly what is income?

I am in California. I am trying to better understand for the purposes of dmi, is social security monthly retirement benefit payment, and federal government civil service retirement benefit payment considered income? it is shown as being exempt so does that just mean if you have it in your bank acct at the time you file it is exempt?

Everything is income.

However, you back out Social Security Income from the chapter 7 means test. But pension, whether private or government IS income.

Note, in chapter 13, SSI is counted as a source of income and can be used to fund a plan.
