How we can get a checking account & a job?!

We've filed Chap 13 and it hasn't even be confirmed yet and I'm having trouble getting a checking account so that I can cash my paycheck and pay my bills outside of bankruptcy, does anyone know how I can get a checking acct?
Also, I thought Chap 13 was suppose to protect me from judgement of employer not hiring me because of credit scoring, I got rejected from a job because of the chap 13 not the scoring, maybe I'm nieve but to me, my bankruptcy says I'm getting control of my debt which makes me some what creditable.

I'd say if you can prove your BK is the reason an employer did not hire you, you can prove that that employer broke the law.

It's almost impossible to prove that they didn't hire you because of your bankruptcy history. There are so many different things one can 'make up' to say you just weren't the right candidate. Shitty, but true.

You can be refused employment if the job requires a government security clearance of some type. I believe it is extremly difficult to get a government security clearance if you have filed bk, so based on unability to obtain a clearance, you would be "overlooked".

Having to be Bonded is another one that I read. If the job requires the individual to be Bonded, a person who's filed BK either would have trouble being Bonded or cannot be Bonded. Not sure which.

The ability to be Bonded was one specific example where BK, itself, could hinder employment opportunities.

Here's a link to another Forum where you may find info on Banks where you can get an account:

I tried accessing Forum Threads there and had to be a registered member. Maybe you have to register first before you can view threads. Buy you might find some info there to help.

I found a bank that does not use Chexsystems, they use Telecheck- so long as you dont have any negs with telecheck, they will approve you for a checking, savings, atm, and visa check card. You will need 25 to open on, or 50 for both- just call this number and tell them you need a member number to open a checking account. Its USAA bank, and they ROCK!

            Good luck!

Also, just a note for you until you can get a bank acct,...........

Wal-Mart will cash paychecks up to $1000 for a small fee. $3 I think. You could buy Money Orders for your bills there as well for 39 cents each.

Another thought would be to take your pay check to the Bank it's written on to cash it. Your employer's bank should cash the check for you since the account is with them. You'll probably have to have proper ID, but at least you can get your money that way.

That's a couple of short term ideas for you to get by until you can get a bank acct.

AGREED!! They are the best. They use telecheck but not chexsystems or CRA pulls. Their customer service is WONDERFUL!!!

Is it a good idea to get a 2nd checking account at a different bank pre-bk and just put the minimum amount in?

Several people have commented on the Forum about using Internet Banks. You might look into that. Also, we had a friend who had real good luck with "Mom and Pop" type banks. Their inconvenient in that there's only the one. You don't get a lot of frills in the way of services, but the Independent Banks tend to be easier to deal with for folks in or just coming outa BK.

What is mom & pop type banks???

I went to my local Regions Bank where I live and explained the situation up front to the Manager and how I am trying to get my financial affairs straight again, and she approved me for an account even though I showed up negativly in Chexsystems. I had moved to a new town, and had to change banks because there was no Bank of America in the town that I live in now...It turns out the manager herself had filed BK years before and knew exactly what I was going through...They have been wonderful !! I know the managers of different branches do have the authorization to override what Telechex is telling them..Good luck...I was in tears before I went in and talked to her.

Good post fsugirl. There are still some good people in the world. I opened my new account just before filing. When I pulled a recent credit report, it showed that bank pulled a credit report on me. Lucky it was pulled the day before I filed!!!

Sometimes they are wholly owned, independents under a Chain name. We had one in the little town we lived in in Missouri. United Missouri Bank is a large chain bank, but the branch in our town wasn't a member of the UMB umbrella. It was privately owned and operated, and the owner paid UMB a franchise fee for the name. I could cash a check up to $200 at another UMB, and I could make deposits as well. But deposits made at other UMB branches took nearly a week to post into my branch account. Also, if I used my ATM card at another UMB branch, I was charged the same fee as if I was from a completely different Banking Company.

A basic example would be First National Bank of Any Town USA. It's the only one. Maybe a satellite branch or drive-thru on the other side of town. But you won't find any more of that bank any where else. There aren't many left, but they do still exist in small towns.

We're currently with Regions and they are one of the nicest Banks we've ever done business with. The relocation assistant that worked with us, set us up with a local Regions bank officer. We already had an account and all the paperwork ready when we got to town. All we had to do was sign papers, give them a deposit, and we were on our way. Turns out the Bank Officer we met with wasn't just any old Checking Acct officer. She's a VP for Regions.
