I was really looking forward to telling you all about my meeting w/ BK attorney, but we walked away feeling strange.
I chose this attorney because I had gone to school with him and knew from what I rmembered that I would be comfortable with him. Also, a co-worker of mine had used him for his BK and said he liked him.
The dude was 45 minutes late for the meeting. We told us to follow him into his office, stormed ahead of us, helped himself to a diet coke, and listened to his voice mail (out loud -- I heard messages from other clients), checked his email, and then finally gave us a glance. During this 5 minutes of awkwardness, I kept silently mouthing to my huband "wanna go? let's go!"
But anyway, he finally got into it, calculated some figures, then informed us that we would be better off letting our house go, because we could rent a place in the next city for 8-900 bucks and save 500 on our living expenses. We should turn over our cars, rent a house....I convinced him we would consider letting the cars go, but were not leaving our home. We talked a while (the meeting was 1hr 45 mins). He estimated a 100% repay at 1300/month. I finally reminded him we had gone to school together, then he launched into school stuff that had happened over 25 years ago. Then he just got goofy. He's the one who said that the 6 month income calculations are "basically" figured from the time up until you file. I aked him about his fees, and he said it would be 2000, but he needed a 500 retainer, and 275 or whatever to file. We made another appointment for later in April, and left.
I was a little deflated after the meeting. The next day I had my credit counseling appointment, and I'd have to say that she was much more helpful than he was. Our meeting was 1.5 hours! It was very informative, but we got to talking about other stuff and decided that it's too bad we had to meet under these circumstances, and decided we'd get together some time for a cup of coffee
I was really dreading the meeting, but I left with a better understanding of our situation and maybe even made a new friend.
When I told her who my attorney is she just stared blankly at me. Then she whipped out a sheet of paper w/ other attorneys and circled a name at the top. I'll be making an appointment for a free consult with him as soon as I can.
Today we meet w/ tax man. I can't wait to find out how much money we owe to the IRS. Can't wait to get them filed, so I can get a certified copy and file!!
