Most paychecks don't have your whole social security number (if any of it) on them nowadays, so I can see how an oversight could happen.

My company still puts them on the check.

My school gave all faculty and employees ID numbers two years ago and that is what shows up now on our pay stubs. But my attorney mentioned they would blacken my SS# anywhere it showed before scanning into their computer.
