Sell house with equity?

Can I sell my house that I can't afford anymore and keep the exempt equity amount? House payment current; never late. Do I have to wait six months? One year? I cannot put a roof over my children's heads without taking the exempt equity amount with me! Please advise

This question needs to be directed at an attorney in your state. As far as I know, you can keep the equity if its your "real" intention to use the equity to buy another residence.

I filed in Michigan using federal exemptions and I was told by my lawyer that we could only get $20,000 in home exemptions.
