How long after discharge were you able to rent?

Hi,
We found out that we are able to file near the end of January because of a lot of recent cc usage. My husband just found a job since we've moved here and we were able to stop using the cards and cut them up. I know it takes about 3 months to get the discharge after filing, but I am wondering if any of you were able to rent soon after? We are living with my parents and it's not an ideal situation that we're in right now and would like to get out of here soon after the discharge, but we're really nervous that we'd be homeless if we left too soon. Any advice or experiences on this would be great.

First off, good for you to not CC's right now.

From my experience, every place we called had a different set of rules about renting after BK. A few places would allow us as long as we were discharged and others were 3 to 4 months and some were a year. Point is, it's hard to put an exact length of time on it. My best advice is to call around to apartments, condo's and houses to get a feel for what you may be up against.

Do not worry, you won't be homeless. I had the same fears but it all worked out. In fact, we signed our lease to rent a house (a duplex) before we were discharged.

im not sure if your town is listed on craigslist...but go on their and place an ad for apt/house wanted.......and describe your situation regarding how your credit isn't perfect.....no need to go into too much detail....in my ad i also informed them i would have to pay the deposit in installments since im already renting from somehwere....i did just that and received so many responses from people who were just trying to rent....im really a good responsible person...and unfortunately..my credit says otherwise to people

I had some problems finding a place that would rent to me. However, I was mostly looking into the larger managed complexes. I actually went thru Apartments.com. Be up front about the bankruptcy. Most of the ones I talked with said "no dice". Most of them had guidelines that stated it had to be two years after bankruptcy. I was told to look into finding a place that was more personal (individual renting as opposed to a big managed place).

However, I did find a large apartment complex (over 300 units) that said it all depending on the credit report and that bankruptcies didn't mean I was automatically disqualified. Turned out they just wanted a large ($500) deposit along with first month's rent.

I was scared to death at first. It seemed like every place was saying no, no, no. My husband said, "well, there are millions of people out there who've filed.... they can't all be homeless." LOL
It will work out. Just make sure you start looking early. Be honest with them upfront (before paying any fees to see if you're approved and getting a credit check).

That's exactly what my husband said too. It just is scary to think that you may only get some desperate person who's only trying to rent because they can't get anyone in a bad area....We can't move for a couple of months after our discharge so hopefully we'll be able to get into a good place.
