I will be filing in the next month or so, whenever I find an extra 300 bucks to pay the filing fee. about 25 years ago, a woman who is dear to me, willed me an antique hand-embroidered silk tapestry, appraised at about 1500 dollars. I am not going to let this go to anyone, ever. can the trustee take it away? how can I make sure I keep it with no problems? is this something I have to tell my lawyer about?

That's a unique item.

The type of item it would take THE right buyer on the THE right day when the moons are all aligned and Aquarius is in the 7th house to bring the full appraised value.

The Trustee isn't gonna shop around for the right buyer. The local Auctioneer the Trustee works with would put it up for bids at the next scheduled "Seized Assets/BK Court Sale". Quick and dirty. Dusts off hands. Next??!!

A lot of valuation lies in description.

Antique, ornate, imported, Chinese desk.

OR

Old wooden desk.

Which sounds like it's worth more??

Instead of Antique, hand-embroidered, silk tapestry,.......

maybe try

Floral ((insert appropriate pictogram description)) wall hanging.

If you stumbled on it at a Yard Sale, Garage Sale, or in a 2nd Hand Store or Flea Market,............ What price do you think they'd ask?? Maybe a buck at a yard sale or garage sale. Maybe $25-$50 at a 2nd hand store or Flea Market.

Unless the right seller had it and knew what they had,......... You can bet the actual price wouldn't be asked. Just watch Antiques RoadShow on PBS. Listen to the stories about how some of those people came upon their finds.
