How does the trustee/courts know about all your accounts?

I'd imagine to file bankruptcy you have to list all your checking and savings accounts. How does the trustee or courts know that you've given an exhaustive list?

I have a checking and savings account with a credit union, and a recently opened ING savings account with $500 in it. That money would be exempt, but if I file, and say I forgot to list that account by accident, would they find out and come after me for fraud? Do they go by the list you give them and that's it? Not sure how that works.

If the money is exempt, why risk not listing it.

As a general matter, the trustees go off of what you provide them. They generally do not do independant research. However, if you case raises red flags for other issues, then they may go more in depth. Also, you will be put under oath and asked if you have listed all your assets, and if you say yes, when the true answer is no, that is a little thing called perjury.

as reading this post, i just realized that i did not include my account with ING. i have not contributed to it in about a year, cause i haven`t had the funds to put in it. right now there is only 53.00 in it, do i need to tell my attrney about this or is it worth mentioning seeing as it is only 53.00?
