    Threatening Collection Agency

I have $25,000 worth of debt on 1 credit card.. These collection agencies called my Brother to get my phone number sense they didn't have it, they tricked him into giving it to them. He told them I was in the Coast Guard and on a deployment (which is true) then the collection agency keeps calling my cell phone. I don't return there calls, and then they left 1 message and said, maybe you can't get this message cause you are in the Coast Guard, but I will give you until the end of today to call me back. If I don't hear back from you I will validate your parents statement about the coast guard, and see if we can't get a hold of you by calling them up. Well I am sure it was a scare tactic but I don't want my commanding officer to know about my debt. So I Called him up, and asked what me being in the Coast Guard has to do with this debt, and he said a LOT! do you think the coast guard wants someone in there group that is in debt for $25,000? That just pissed me off so I hung up!

My question is do they have the right/power to call the Coast Guard and try to get a hold of me through them? Because I would get into serious trouble if they did that we are only allowed to receive ER calls! And does he have the right to tell the coast guard about my debt?

Or was this just a scare tactic to get me to call them back, hoping that I was afraid that they would call them?

They can only discuss the debt with you only but not a third party. They can however rn to court and get a judgment against you and initiate any legal garnishment remedies like wage garnishments and/ot bank levies.

      thanks,

thats what I thought, but they wouldn't be able to contact the coast guard and say get me this person... only thing they could do if they garnished wages would be send it to the coast guard to collect money thats it.. Not contact them and tell them whats going on or anything. Or talk about me, and tell them to find me now.

Actually if you are in the military and you can't pay your bills they can send something to your command. And depending on your command, the CO might found out. The direct chain of command will know.

What would they send to your command? What would the point of that be? I still think the call was just a scare tactic to get me to call them back, I don't see what they would tell my command? Why would they send something to my command? and what would they send? It is not illegal to be in debt, and not against military code to owe money that you can't pay.
