    USAA and Insurance

I know many were asking about this, so I thought I would post about our experience so far. We have renters and auto with USAA, both were to be renewed in August. I received my renters renewal a week ago and just printed out the insurance cards for the autos.

I just checked our account online, we still have access, and the insurance renewal payment has been added.

You had included a CC from them in your BK correct?

Quite a bit depends on the state you live in and the insurance laws. I called USAA to change my address, which they did. The woman on the phone noted we "had problems" with their banking department (we included 1 cc in our BK from USAA) and gave me a heads up that her computer said it would not be renewing our auto policy in December. I was grateful for the information. I checked out Geico and they were just slightly more than USAA. I am going to change companies in August and avoid dealing with it at Christmas.

I am hoping that we will be able to keep our USAA insurance. We insure our cars and our home through them. I am filing a chapter 7, separately, and my husband will still be paying on the USAA credit card, which is up to date. Hopefully I will be discharged and my responsibility to pay it over, but since my husband is going to continue paying it, I am hoping that we won't lose our insurance with them.

As long as you don't include USAA in your BK, then your insurance will be fine. You only run the risk of your insurance not being renewed if you file a credit card or car loan etc. in your BK. The rep. from USAA told us that our insurance policies may not be renewed since we included 2 cc in our BK. We may change insurance companies rather than waiting to see if we get canceled b/c I heard it's hard to get insurance again if you have a cancelation on your record.

The nicest thing about USAA is that the CC part of the company and the insurance part don't seem to communicate too well. I included my USAA CC in my BK. Knowing that I would not be able to renew, I to went ahead and canceled my auto insurance with them.
Now imagine my surprise one day when I go to the mail box and find a statement from USAA that they had credited my checking account $1,700. They have an annual "profit sharing" deal. Where if claims are low you get a refund on your policy (payable when you end your relationship with them). I got my statement every year but didn't think it was ever real money. It was.
Seems like most companies would have applied my refund to my past due CC. But like I said I don't think the two departments talk to each other.

So I wonder if USAA will keep the money in our subscriber savings account after I cancel our insurance? We BK'd one cc of theirs. Can they keep the money if the debt is discharged?

I guess you missed the post I made saying I included 2 CC's from USAA in BK.

I have received both renewal policies in the mail and the renewal amount has been added to the account online.

We had $15k USAA CC debt included in BK; so we were prepared for USAA to cancel our auto insurance--but our renewal notice came yesterday. Has anyone else in CA with USAA CC debt had a different experience?

in most cases with a BK on file USAA will not allow you to establish NEW accounts. But anything you have in existence continues. When you call and speak with a phone rep in P&C if they say you wont be renewed ask very nicely to speak with a supervisor. Now, if you move from a house to a apartment or vice versa that is a new policy and they probably wont renew. But if you have car insurance, and continue to pay you can add or subtract cars with out too much of a problem. They (USAA) just wont refer you to other lines of business for new products for at least 7 years.

I was told by many(supervisors and GM) that they can refuse you renewal, it all depends on where you are located.

Update........We received a email from USAA about a week ago stating that our Auto Policy has been renewed and attached were the new insurance cards. Then I get a letter in the mail from USAA stating that they will NOT renew my homeowners policy b/c of filing on CC's with them. What a mess! Now I need to get a new homeowners policy with someone else by November. But I can't argue with USAA about it since it is there right to terminate the policies. The bill comes in the mail as one every month for auto and homeowners, you would have thought they could renew both policies.
