It must matter what state your from, I'm from the wonderful state of Indiana. We visited a couple of different attorneys and called a bunch of them. We paid around $1200 for a chapter 7. Then we had a filing fee of 297 and another $200+ for credit counseling and for them to help clean up our credit afterwards. So it was around $1700 total. All the attorneys told us a chapter 7 was capped at $1200 and a chapter 13 at $3400. Our attorneys office allowed us to refer the creditors to them after the $100 down payment.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I live in the DC metro area, which tends to be on the pricier side of things. Maybe that's why my BK attorney sounds rather costly. But, the general consensus is, yes, the attorney needs to be absolutely paid in full prior to filing? (sigh) Not the answer I wanted to hear.... Again, though, thanks for your answers!!!

Your lawyer is a non priority unsecured debt. Thus if you filed bankruptcy still owing him he wouldn't get paid because it would be discharged
. Thus they are required to get paid first

I was just curious.
My attorney had our counselings included with his fee. And I am going to do the cleaning myself, so I will know it is done the right way.
