    renting before and after discharge?

Here I am again. I'm looking to find a place to rent in Florida, all of the places I've found tell me that they can't rent to me before discharge because they can't evict me since I'm protected by my Bankruptcy filing. I didn't think that that was in issue unless they were someone I filed against, is this true?

Also, why would they require that I have been discharged for 2 or 3 years before they rent to me? I have two small children and I need a place to live, but am essentially homeless at this point. I am working, I make decent money, not great though - hence the need to file BK, and I am living in an extended stay hotel right now since no one will rent to me. I had great credit up until now, I have no real bills other than a cell phone, if they look at my payment history, they will see that I paid my bills and rent on time previously, so why would filing BK have any impact on renting a place?

Hi HelpMe.. so sorry to hear that news. I'm in Florida, too. You may need to rent from a mom and pop owned apartment or house for awhile. Most times, private owners don't do a credit check and will rely on your work reference. Larger corporate or investor owned properties have more stringent guidelines. Check the Flyer and Sunday's paper. Good Luck.
