Then you would never live in CA. Our rent is way more than that.

The income levels there aren't enough to pay it. More people need to refuse to pay those high figures in order to bring prices down. As long as people stop demanding to pay high rents, they will come down. People need to be cheap and learn to haggle hard or walk away. I would need to make $175,000/yr. to live in that state. It's like the economy there is way different than the rest of the country. They might as well have a totally different currency in California since the dollar has very little value there.

You should be able to use the allowed amount on the means test. Use the actual on schedule J.

            Means test - allowed amount
            Schedule J - actual amount

Try this On-line bankruptcy Means test and see if you pass.

                yeah

I took that test using the allowed amount for my state. I was -$1069 or something... good test.

Simply, supply and demand. Kid pays over 4k just to have a view of San Diego harbour and there is a major wait list in his apt. building. Same with NYC apartments overlooking the skyline.

How is it possible for kids to pay that kind of money? I barely gross $4k? I would need to make $16,000/mo. to justify paying that kind of money. That is absolutely insane. Rent should never be more than 25% of your gross income. If it is, then you need to live some place else. That is why this country is so messed up. That sickens me that people pay that outrageous amount of money to live.

It's all relative as you stated regarding salary.

How do kids make $200k/yr? Is everyone in California a CEO of some large company? Sounds like too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Debtmonster, in a country as diverse as the US there are lots of professions and cities where people make a lot of money that most in other cities would never make in several lifetimes. It's been repeated here so many times and you keep repeating your surprise. When I'd drive from San Jose to San Francisco you'd pass thru some filthy rich locales here .. Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Atherton and more. There are lawyers, doctors, CEOS, consultants, stockbrokers, bankers etc that make a lot of money. Also people make money on bonuses and stock options. Hey, I can't fanthom Bill Gates or Warren Buffet being worth $30-40 billion or more but that's not my reality. I mean $1655 a month in rent is not a lot in most of California. In SF, you'd have a waiting list 50 pages long if you charged $1655 for a 4 family apartment in most locations.

Oh debtmonster in FL, us Cali people can't believ you think $1625 is a lot for rent... it would be HEAVEN to pay that little for a decent place in a decent area out here. Just goes to show you it's all perspective!

I used $1900, the most allowable for my schedule J too. And we don't make $175K a year either. And most rents for a 3 bedroom track home are ~$2200.

No, San Diego is not for the faint of heart
