It's just going to suck trying to live on $2,000/mo. or less. You can't do that in today's society. Look at all of the people paying what I gross in rent alone.

Yep... it's all my fault for the companies I worked for who laid us off. I'll take that responsibility down with me when I end it. Thanks for noting it for me. You're such a pal.

Those employers didn't hold a gun to your head and make you spend money at:

        #13 Home Depot ($2,000)
        #14 Dillards ($880)
        #15 Best Buy ($2500)
        #16 Radio Shack ($1400)
        #17 Nautilus Bowflex ($1500)

Plus the hundreds of thousands you spent on credit cards, BMW's and other expensive cars.

At the time we purchased all of this stuff we had a household income of over $100,000. Now we don't.

At least we had fun while at lasted. I am so happy to discharge this stuff. After reading all of your posts, I want to do it again and again. I want to file for bankruptcy for every single legal time I entitled. You have all added fuel to my fire. I am to the point where I think bankruptcy is fun and I am trying to convince as many people as I can to do it now.

I don't have the $3500 for the attorney fees. I am paying them $500/mo. Look how many months it will take until I reach that point.

With your history of being laid off, you should have learned from your past and put money in the bank once you were making that much money, instead of buying an expensive car. You know, in case you got laid off again.

I think you are full of it though. You said in a prior post that you haven't had a real job in 3 years. Yet, you must have bought that BMW more recently than that, no?

I can't sell the furniture and the Bowflex. Those finance companies are going to want it back during the 341 hearing.

I have a home business. It was doing good and now it is tanking hard with the economy. If you haven't been under a rock and watch the news periodically, you can hear all about layoffs and company bankruptcies. Between that business and my wife, we topped $100k. I didn't start out with the BMW. I had another SUV that was 1/2 the price. It broke down 9 times in the first year. After a while they wanted to charge us to come tow the vehicle because we live so far out. So much for the warranty. That's when I got fed up with it and bought the Bimmer. The income was steadily increasing every month months and then all of a sudden it stopped. All of my customers were losing their jobs.

I was forecasting to make over $15,000/mo. It never happened. Every time I get any money put away in savings, we end up blowing it on emergencies during a bad month.

We live very far from where all of the restaurants, stores and everything else is. The LAST THING YOU WANT is a piece of $hit car breaking down in the middle of nowhere, having no cell phone coverage for a 25 mile stretch.

It's not up to me to decide to live in the homeless shelter. My wife would never be caught dead in that place. Why would I want to go to the homeless shelter for when I have a house that I can sit here and wait until the foreclosure and auction? I get to stay here rent-free until that time. Why would I want to put such a burden on myself by going there now? I'd have no Internet and no way to run what little business I have left.

San Diego is beautiful too..only wish I could visit it more often.

That's the problem I have now. We have two dogs and my wife absolutely refuses to get rid of them. If we didn't have those dogs, I could easily live in some small $400/mo. apartment or efficiency. I have one of the dogs away before and you should have seen the uproar my wife made. The police were involved and everything. It was a very ugly situation. If we didn't have the dogs, I wouldn't need an SUV to carry the dog cage in the back. A small hatchback car such as an old '99 Honda Civic hatchback or VW Golf would work just find for us as long as we lived in the city near jobs and stores. I wouldn't want an old car living way out where we live now. It's too risky with breakdowns. That's why I am including my house in the BK. After the sheriff tells us to leave, I'm going to move to another state if I don't commit suicide first.

I barely have a 10th grade education and I make 78k a year. I have had many setbacks in my life but have been determined to succeed. This BK and IRS situation i'm in is another setback, However I am dealing with this as I have dealt with everything in my life, as an opportunity. I can either jump off a bridge or I can figure out by reading, getting advise and asking for help how to manage this mess I'm in. I am 54 years and have worked in the silicon valley for 24 years which is very competitive and you need to have a BS just to be an admin. or mail person. I have been homeless, a drug addict and suicidal in my life and have been able to work at 1 company in silicon valley for 13 years and my job I have now for 11 years. HARD WORK DM and no easy handouts. I'm the one that worked overtime and weekends and would take on new projects because I wanted to be more than what I felt I was and not by achieving more finances but more stability and integrity. It has paid off, however I made 1 big mistake and that is to trust people to give you the right information without checking out their background. Such as my stock broker (lehmans), Backdating of stock options (the company i work for) and then a margin lone that I received a margin call because the stock dropped from $75 to $ 15 dollars in a week. So my learning experience is not the end result but how am I going to take this experience and grow from it. I lost over $500,000 dollars plus some. I cried for awhile and got back up brushed myself off and am now moving forward. I am not going to let this situation make me a victim, I refuse. I am going to learn from this and that is my lesson. Not how much MONEY am I going to end up with in the end, how many toys etc.

Another point the reason I have a 10th grade education is because my family crashed and burned when I was a teenager and I had no choise but to quit school and get a job. There was nothing I could do. This was in the early 70's. This has stayed with me my whole life and I never feel like I need to apoligize to anyone for my lack of education.

So my point to you is no matter if you have a higher education or no education you can succeed if you really want to. But if you think that someone can really write the guidelines for you for life you are needing to look for more than a new career but maybe some help in figuring out who you are first and then seeing what you would really like to do - then maybe the money will follow but until then if you don't work on yourself it won't matter if you have money or not you won't be happy.

Good luck and hope this helps.
Wow, nice story. Without a doubt, you will recover from this and be fine again. Did you have a family along the way? Cause you are a great role model.

What kind of income does a person need to be able to afford to live San Diego to rent a 3 bedroom house? I remember reading about the guy making $80k in Santa Clara while he lived at the Salvation Army. I don't want to do that. Do they have a lot of $120-150k jobs in California so people can live the same as other people in the rest of the country who live in a meager $40-50k?

If California is that beautiful, then maybe I should move there. I just don't want 80-90% of my net income after taxes paying the rent.
