How to pay for filing fee. Cash? Check? Charge?

    Hi everyone,
I think i am going to FINALLY file on Monday. Well, I will probably chicken out and wait a few months. I don't know. Anyways...if/when I do file, how do I pay for it? Do I just bring cash to the Court House along with my paperwork? I don't have a checking account right now so I can't write a check. Thanks so much for your help.

Don't wait - just file - you will feel better. Cash or money orders work.
    Chapter 7 filed 10/21/2008
    341 - 11/26 went smooth NO ASSET
Took 115 days after 341 - But Finally DISCHARGED 3/25/09

Thank you Relief. I am just afraid of the 341. If none of this was face to face (and in front of a zillion people) I would be OK. I have social anxiety enough as it is and just thinking about it scares the crap out of me. Oh, do you know how many copies of the BK paperwork I need to bring to the courthouse. Should I just fill out one set and make copies at the Courthouse? Thanks for your help again.

I just did my 341 (3) days ago. Please believe me when I say it is easy. We had about 100 people in the room. In my case, we walked up to the table and sat down across from the trustee. Our backs were to everyone else in the room, so it wasn't bad. The trustee asks the questions loud and we just answered in our normal voice. It took 4-5 minutes and it was over. As far as copies go, I can't help you on that one. I had an attorney that filed for me. I'm sure somebody will jump in with the correct answer.

But don't we have to give our full name, address and social out loud? I mean, it doesnt seem safe to me to be saying all of that personal information in front of a bunch of strangers. Am I missing something???

Yes you do have to say all of that information out loud. I didn't even think about that.

I read somewhere that you can pay the filing fee with cash, but not a credit card

                      That's true.

Besides you Bee, since you didn't file yet, has anyone here filed in NY? I'm wondering how the process will go.

You are not asked to state your social security number.

Epiphany is correct. I gave the trustee my social security card, and he verified that the number matches the petition. Then, he read into his tape recorder, "I am presented with
driver's license and social security card for (the petitioner), all appears to be in order, and these are accepted."

If you file on your own, make certain that you redact the social security numbers (as well as any minor dependents names and social security numbers) on the tax returns that are required. If you have a lawyer, they SHOULD to this for you.
Filed 8/08 - Discharged 11/08! Not tracking FICO.
                          Pre-Bankruptcy Net Worth: -$72,000... Today's net worth: $142,000.
If your FICO score just went higher than your net worth, and you are happy about this, you might have a financial problem!
