    Well, I'm filing on Friday

I have to go over all the paperwork and of course, I still have more questions. Every time I think I had asked everything, I get paranoid and find myself thinking of more, forgive me if these have been asked.

As I probably posted, I work from home, so I am self-employed, is being self-employed going to have them look harder for things on my petition? My income is not high at all and this is a no asset case.

Attorney wanted me to make sure that my bank balance as of the day I file is less than $50, well it is now, because a week ago I bought some things with my debit card and the payments cleared, will this look horrible that I made purchases prior to filing?

I asked him also about bank statements that I need to provide, I'm in Brooklyn Ny, he said in Brooklyn they want 6 months, where in Manhattan they would want a year, I'm sure he would know better than I, but now I'm worried about being audited. The audit thing is in my mind because I just filed my 2007 tax return. I filed now because they said you need to show a tax return to the trustee, I didn't file because I didn't make more than $400 for that year ( I started work in 12/07), is filing so late going to raise any red flags?

Sorry for such a long post, I'm thinking of all these things and I can't sleep.

It just makes your job of providing the information slightly more difficult because usually you have to go back a little further on your informtion.

No, the fact that you paid something with a debit card prior to filing is normal. If you bought a luxury item, that is different - but living expenses are expected.

They may ask why you filed late and didn't you say it was because you thought you did not need to file a return with such a small income?

Don't worry, BTDT. Come back and post to your heart's content!

Yes, I didn't think I needed to file, becasue I didn't owe any se taxes.

The purchases with my debit card were actually christmas gifts, that's why I'm worried, and one was to a walgreens.

Did you spend a great deal on the Christmas gifts?
The trustees are looking for large purchases, don't remember the number, but something like $500 or $600 is a trigger. Maybe someone else or the moderator will remember the figure.

I don't think that will be an issue at all. You used a debit card and not a credit card, right?

How much further back would they need on documents?

We used the debit card for living expenses up until about 2 days until we filed (and then made sure they cleared). Our lawyer advised us to do this and not worry about normal everyday expenses, they will not be questioned. Don't sweat it!

I filed my 2006 taxes way late out of sheer laziness. No problem with the trustee although I did get audited by the IRS--but that's another story (had a happy ending but what a pain).

If everything it on the up and up, I wouldn't worry about this were I you.

                        Epiphany,

You got audited because you filed late? I wasn't expecting a refund, would have filed sooner if I had to pay se tax, but didn't have to do that either. I was so upset when they told me to file anyway because the trustee will want last year's tax return Would they audit me because I filed late?
