Filing after tax refund...what to expect?

We get a sizable tax refund every year.(7k-8k) This year, we are using it to pay our lawyer to file, and make our mortgage current. There will be a good amount left over. DH's truck needs an engine, but the truck is paid off, so it is considered an asset. We don't want to put an engine in it, if it is going to be taken from us. Can we spend the money before we file? If we don't spend it, and don't put it in the bank, will we have to show proof of where it is?

The kids are registered for summer camp. I registered them and payed a $600 non-refundable deposit. This was before our financial crisis hit. If I don't pay the remaining balance, we lose $600 amd the kids don't go to camp. Can I pay that with our tax refund? Or will that be considered a luxury spenditure? The balance is $1600.

Any ideas on what to do with the money before we file?

I think the summer camp idea is a good one.
What about any needed dental work or other healthcare needs like new glasses/contacts? Any home repairs? Need any appliances replaced? The cars you'll keep though bk-do they need new tires or any repair/preventive maintence work?Contribute to an IRA. {Check with your lawyer on that one-some states have a time limit between contributions and filing}.
Buy a freezer and stock up on frozen foods.
