Do you receive income in the form of bonuses? The UST may be stalling to see if you're getting a bonus or because they have a hunch your income will increase. I think your attorney is doing the right thing since there was no formal statement of presumed abuse filed. Sounds to me like the UST is grasping at straws or waiting for you to do slip up in some way.
I haven't had and will not soon have an increase in pay-what little bonus I got at Christmas doesn't amount to much (under $1000) and they have check stubs from me for several months time. My atty says they called when requesting the extension and asked "has anything changed"-he took it to mean they thought maybe I'd lost my job or taken a pay cut, since my expenses will not change-I have no children and am no longer married.

I don't know what their tactic is, and my atty was quite surprised as well. I told the atty that if/when they request a deposition, I will not be able to produce receipts for every item on my schedule, so he needs to keep that in mind.

I'm just really worn down by all this-the last 4 months of this hanging over my head are taking a toll at this point.

I can imagine. It could be something as simple as the UST being swamped with cases and needing more time to go through your documentation. No news is good news, I guess, but I'd keep an eye on PACER just in case the UST makes a move.
