I'm currently a resident in NC. In 2003, I lost my job. Then, I was hospitalized twice for a heart condition in 2004. During all of this time, my income dropped from around $85K / year to less than $20K. Between the hospital bills and the lack of spendable income, I'm now completely buried in debt.
This situation finally came to a head in August, when one of my credit card companies won a judgement against me for around $10K. I no longer own a home, and I have no real assets, so they haven't placed any leins on me or garnisheed my wages. Of course, there are several other creditors out there that are probably waiting for the opportunity to take me to court.
Is it possible for me to file a Pro Se Ch7 under the new law? Right now, I earn less than $1600 / month. There's no way that I can afford an attorney. However, the constant phone calls from creditors (3 - 5 each day) is making it really tough. Furthermore, I'm afraid that if I ever find another good paying job, the creditors will pounce on me, and never give me a chance to get back on my feet.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
