Anyone waiting for discharge? BE NICE!!!

    Got ya to read this!

Yesterday was my last day for creditor objections, 11-14-05. I checked Pacer at 5:05 and to my relief....no objections! Hooorrrraaaayyyyy!

So I meet my wife for lunch today and swing by the U.S. clerks office just on a hunch. What if I just stopped by to see where my case was...play dumb...and just ask the clerk what step of the process is next.

My wife and I walk in and a older lady got up from her desk to greet us. She gave a half hearted smile and said..."can I help you". As nicely as possible I gave her a brief explanation of why I was there and I was wondering if she could tell us where we were at in this process. I could tell that she had never had that question before so I said...bet you have never been asked this before and she smiled. I told her I have heard in the news how overwhelmed the bankruptcy offices were since the new laws came into effect and she agreed with another big smile...as if to say...you have no idea.

She got on the computer system near the window and asked for our case number. I told her and she looked up our case.

She said....looks like your in pretty good shape. This was my opportunity....I grabbed my belly and said thank you...I haven't had a compliment like that in years! She looked at my face and saw that I was smiling and she bursted into laughter and started blushing. She tried to explain what she really meant was my case was in good shape. I told her I know but just wanted to take that comment for my own. She and my wife were laughing almost too long...I wanted to know what was up.

The clerk smiled at me and said this....let me do this for you....the magic words I had hoped for. She wrote on a bright orange sticky pad and said she would give this note to her case administrator and see if she could help us out. I thanked her so much for her extra help and she was still grinning from the situation we were all just in.

I dropped my wife back off at work and I headed home.

Just for fun...I checked Pacer and guess what????

Yep....Case discharged! Case Closed!.....my last day for objections was yesterday!

Moral of the story...be nice and friendly and people will sometimes go out of their way to help good people! You all know those types of people who get in someones face to try and get what they want. Charm and personality will take you sooooo much farther than being pushy or mean.

Corny story but hope that it helps anyone who is anxiously waiting for their discharge...take a gamble...be sweet and kind to people for the best results.

Great story! and a good reminder. It can be tough to be all smiley and nice when we are dealing with personal BK, but mom was right, huh? Always smile, be polite - and crack 'em up if you can!!!

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

Great post re: the response to being not just nice, but "friendly". Congrats on the good and quick news.
Another thought...try to put yourself in the other person's shoes...as you did when you talked about how swamped they were.
Slightly "unpure" thought and story. Several years ago a friend and I flew from Chi. to L.V. via Phoenix and back. All four legs of the trip were extremely rough. On two of them, they wouldn't even get the beverage cart out, because they feared that they could not control it. On the way back, we sat next to the door to get more legroom and a male flight attendant was hopping a ride to get home and sat in the little fold down seat that is seldom used. We got to chatting with him about his experiences (good and bad) and as he seemed like a real nice guy and I was single, I straight out asked him, "What's the best way to "hit" on a female flight attendant. His reply was twofold.
        1. Never start out with "I fly a lot and I know..." Seems like 99% of the obnoxious people used that opening line."
        2. Hint..."If I were you, I'd start out by saying something like. I have a sister who used to be a flight attendant and I know how hard it is and I just wanted to say thank you, because I know not enough people do."
Well, I never used the "my sister" line, but I did have a flight attendant take me by the hand and escort me off the plane to a "secured area" to show me the plane and tell me that this was the area she worried about and thought that was where a terrorist attack would come from. (This was 7 years before 9/11). Art
