Just a note about medical bills - that you may not know

This may have been addressed before but if so, it has not been recently. I also think it should be revisited after reading Kam's post below and the fact that so many people b/c of medical expenses.

Did you know that any hospital, which is subsidized by the gov't (most), has to offer financial assistance for those with low income. Now you may not think your income is that low, but it depends how many in your family. I am sure this varies state to state but is usually the same or similar among hospitals within the state. I am in NH and it is in the vicinity of $21,000 for a single person!

I have no insurance and have not for about 5 years. I work for myself and have been in school and I have had a tremendous amount of medical expenses either completely covered or at least substantially reduced. This included breast surgery (whew! it was benign!) last January. For women, there are programs where you can get free mammograms and other health care.

For most of my care it has to go thru hospital billing, therefore it must be a Dr. affiliated with the hospital. I have to apply 2x per year and show proof of income. You might be surprised at the income levels. See if your hospital has a financial assistance department or check with billing.

Another note on medical bills. If you write the billing dept. of your hospital and say "I know I owe you $10,000 but I cannot afford to pay you more than $50.00/month right now. You will have $50 on or before the 15th of every month. I will send more if I can" Sign it, keep a copy mail a copy and as long as you do not mess up the date and amount you promised they cannot touch you. I learned while pursuing delinquent accounts for a chiropractor many years ago - and I tell everyone I can!

Outside of medical expenses, your local electric and phone company may also have similar programs. I was shocked to learn that I could have all those FCC taxes knocked off my phone bill! And that is at Verizon, so I am sure they offer it everywhere they service.

The guidelines vary, but they are not nearly as low as what you need for food tamps so check into it!

There are also Medications Assistance Programs (MAP). There are ones directly with some drug companies, but your hospital may very well have their own (and they do all the paperwork!), so ask your doctor or hospital. Usually what are covered are the newer more expensive drugs. I take daily meds that I pay out of pocket but I also get my migraine meds FREE. Here is one place to begin.

Hope this helps at least some of you!! Even if you do not think you will qualify, still check it out - you just might

GREAT POST - GOOD SOURCE OF INFO FOR OTHERS!!

Many hospitals that are government funded have the HillBurton Plan.... that picks up and pays medical expenses for those that have no insurance. Your doctor must apply for it for you with the hospital when you are admitted or right after admission.

Keep these suggestions in mind, look into the ones that can help you with expenses and USE THEM..... We all pay taxes so you can........... leave your "pride" at the door!!!

My suggestions are from "personal experience" and research only. Do not consider this as legal advice. Each bankruptcy case is different.

The law in IL is any amount you can afford to pay, even $15 or $25 and they have to accept it and cannot harrass you about it.

My personal pet peeve is what they do with insurance co's that they won't do with individuals. 3 years aago I had open heart surgery...6 bypasses and a 7th cleaned out (Yes, I was very close to not being here. Three years before that I had been told that my BEST artery was 80% blocked and that no surgery was worth the risk/reward...by 3 specialists! and not to expect to live more than 8-10 years. However, in the interim, they had begun doing the surgery "off-pump" and was not as risky)
Anyway, back to my pet peeve. The hospital bill was $57,000 (and I got out a day earleir than average). The hospital bill showed that they knocked the bill down to about $18,000 for the Ins. Co. Now why can't they, won't they fo that for individuals w/out health ins.???
BTW, we were very fortunate. My wife works for the org. that owns and runs the hospital, so we have good ins. The entire ER, surgery and hospital cost us only $300. Art

          Three things:

          1. There are so called "discount medical" plans that you pay a small monthly fee, and they act like "proxy" insurance companies to get fees knocked down like the "real" insurance companies do... cheap insurance? SCAMS? I don't know...

          2. For the 20% who can afford those whopping bills, it pays off the delinquent debts for the rest of us poor folk???

          3. News story a few weeks ago... poor guy fell off his bike and went to the hospital unconscious... Shortly after arriving at the hospital, he was OK, but the hospital bill for "trauma center activation" was over $12k.

I did read recently about hospitals (in Lancaster Co, PA?) giving the Amish (who don't believe in using insurance) the same rates they give insurance companies, because they are always so consciensious (sp?) about paying their bills.

Georgia has a trust fund set up for uninsured people who meet their income requirements. The income requirements were very generous, and I qualified for 50% off my hospital bills. Some lower-income people even get free care. (With 3 hospital stays, 4 E/R visits, umpteen proceedures, and finally major surgery, I still couldn't afford them even with the discount, but that's a whole 'nother story.)

For someone with a less serious illness, the trust fund might mean the difference between being able to pay the bill and having to file bankruptcy.

Update 2/15/11 - Still totally debt-free except for the mortgage, which we're paying down quickly!
