Life over after BK? Not a chance!

My wife and I were discharged a few weeks ago from our chapter 7. We got rid of 100% or our debt and will be giving our house back to the bank as it was included in the bankruptcy without reaffirmation. We gave back two cars and about 50k in unsecured debts. We are giving up our house as it is much more than we need or want at this time.

For all those who thinks life is ending during the bankruptcy...life is really just beginning.

We have been approved for a very nice, luxury apartment whenever we are ready to move. Moving from our house into this apartment will be saving us almost $900 per month and we get swimming pools, work out facilities and a far better location than our current home.

We have also just been approved for an auto loan with Roadloans for up to $25,000. Your next question: But what is the interest rate? 13.79% for 72 months. We have two paid off cars at the moment but we will be selling one for cash...1995 Nissan Altima with 198,000 miles. We only plan on buying a used vehicle around $15,000 and about a 48 month term. We love not having a car payment but there are many benefits to getting a reasonable car loan...and we will actually be able to travel out of town. We were totally shocked to get this kind of financing after two reports and bureaus in the mid 500's. Job time and incomes saved us...and our payment history is good too.

Our goal is never to have more than one practical car payment, no credit cards ever again, we currently have $3,000 in our savings for emergency and we will be living 100% based on just one of our incomes. Our negative process is over and aside for the credit report disputing...its all good from here!

The light at the end of the tunnel is financial freedom to make better decisions and to re-prioritize your financial life and future. We feel great about our decision to file and have learned a lifetime of lessons!

Good luck to you all and Happy Holidays!

great to hear! very happy for you both! whooo hooo!

not really sure of your situation but maybe consider not getting such an expensive used car for 15K. that sure is a lot of money for used no matter the car. you can honestly pick up a great used car from craigslist.org in your area for well under $6K max and get along with a $4K just fine maybe. something to consider.

also, you really should get 3 credit cards. it helps build your credit and you dont ever need to use them, except for emergencies like we are supposed to do. i do see many after years of not having them wish they would have started after their bk with cc. in the future i only plan to have well under $5K max ($3K even better) in credit cards only. i just cant see why you would need more.

    good luck

Congrats! Are you going for the new apartment complex?

Research Roadloans heavily before you sign. I've heard some complaints about their tactics at creditboards.com. (Illegal repos, calling 10X on the day of your payment due date if your payment did not post prior, etc.)
Most of my information is from personal experience or HOURS and HOURS of online research. When you're searching online, keep in mind there is no guarantee that the info is completely up to date, and your situation is unique from anyone else's. Do your homework, and consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision.

        Thanks...

I researched Roadloans heavily but they are one of the best resources for post bk'ers.

Regarding credit cards...I have two surviving accounts...one with a 3200 limit and one with a 6000 limit. I put $200 on each of them and will revolve for a long time. The car loan will be my 3rd active tradeline.

With the loan I have to spend atleast 7500....has to be 2000 or newer with less than 70k...most 3-6,000 cars do not fit in that category. We have excellent income sources and feel that we can atleast have a decent car do drive around during our off time...our other car is a 1997 buick lesabre with 170k....I am 33 so having this buick as a second car is my sacrifice to the greater good of our finances....we still need a good reliable family car that we can travel in and enjoy. $15k for us is a large sacrifice compared to our last 10 years....we always had two 20-30,000 cars...that was stupid!

What a great post about Life After BK. I hope I fare as well. I too have had good credit and a strong employment history. In addition to my BK, I've gone through my apartment, top to bottom, cleaned and scoured, thrown, emptied and tossed anything I have no further use for. I feel like a caterpillar getting ready to toss this cocoon. Thanks for your inspiration!
