filing bankruptcy AFTER agreeing to debt negotiation?

Hello--I have a general question here; hopefully someone has had some experience with this or knows the answer.

I signed on with a reputable debt negotiation company back in July to pay off a pretty big debt (around $20,000 in credit cards, and I have more than that that I couldn't get help for). However, since that time my job has dwindled away to nothing and my marriage is in trouble! (Sound like a country song, don't I?!) I'm the first to admit that I am very bad with money and once I get out of this mess, I am not going to do it again, but in the meantime--what, if anything, would be the repercussions of my telling the debt negotiation company I have decided instead on filing for bankrupcty, and then filing for chapter 7? I can't find anything specifically in my paperwork from the debt negotiation company stating anything on this other than the fact that if I do this, I will lose any money I have already given them, which I can live with if necessary.

Any opinions? Thank you very much.

consult a bk attorney. if you need to file for bk chapt 7 then you need to file. im not sure if you are paying the debt company fees but that cant stop you from filing a bk if you want to.

attorneys are free and you should seek 3 or more consults until you find one that you are comfortable with.
Im not an attorney or a trustee. You cant trust me either though!

There is nothing they can do, they will try and talk you out of it so they keep getting money but thats about it. I am not sure what effects it will have regarding the new law if that will qualify you for credit counseling or not.
