    Foreign debt

Ok I had a Amex card for $5000 in the UK about 6 yrs ago I stopped paying on about 2 yrs ago. They called my dad a few times then gave up. Or so it seemed. They called FROM LONDON today, my husband at his work. Left a UK Phone number to call back.

Can I tell them to take a hike? Does debt collector laws in the US apply in this case?
Stopped paying c. cards February 2009
    Retained attorney 11/5/09 - $100k in C.Card debt - $120000 per year income - Filed Feb 2010 - 341 Apr 2010 - No Asset Case/Report of No Dist Apr 2010 - Discharged June 2010
    Case went without a hitch!
I HELD MY HEAD HIGH IN THAT COURTROOM AND NOW I AM MOVING ON!

I abandoned several credit card accounts in South America, some with Citibank, and they tried calling, but ultimately there was nothing they could do. Funny thing is, Citibank there doesn't talk to Citibank here so I was able to get a relationship here no problem, never any questions, offsets, nothing. Can't see why it would be different in UK, although you might be blacklisted with Amex period.
    Stopped paying: 08/10, Filed CH7: 08/27/10 , 341 & No Asset Report: 10/6/10, Last day to object: 12/06/10, Discharged: 12/07/10, Closed: 12/08/10
AHEM.....NOT AN ATTORNEY, NOT ADVICE, ETC, ETC

I wouldn't worry too much about that debt - just as joe said.

BTW, your user-name sounds VERY familiar to me. Any chance you are on loansafe as well?

YES I'm on loansafe also but I've given up the loan mod joke/run around. House is now on short sale and we move into a lease purchase home next week!!! AND we rented out our old (short sale) house on a month to month lease

          Hi all,

I think you treat foreign creditors the same as domestic creditors. Chapter 15 of title 11 deals with foreign entanglements

ยง 1513. Access of foreign creditors to a case under this title

          (a) Foreign creditors have the same rights regarding the commencement of, and participation in, a case under this title as domestic creditors.

Of course you could invoke the Monroe Doctrine.....

Ha, I knew it. That's good to hear that it worked out for you. We finally got our HAMP sealed by the judge after the lender wanted to pull the rug under our feet.

BTW, on loansafe, I'm "MyHAMP" - so you might know me as well...after all, it's a small world..
