    Exemption question

I am correct in believing that if a person purchases an item ( washer/dryer) with the store holding a security interest, state exemptions have no bearing on this?

Nope, state exemptions (outside the BK context) do not protect the debtor from secured creditors.

However, under 522(f), you can remove judicial liens and non-PMSI liens against personal property (e.g. washer and dryers) if the lien impairs the exemption. But a PMSI, the exemptions are of no use.
